Description of Practice
The nurse in professional development practice provides non-academic learning activities intended to
build on the educational and experiential bases of professional nurses and other personnel who assist in
providing nursing care. These learning activities are designed to enhance nursing practice, education,
administration, research, or theory development with the goal of improving the health of the public. The
purpose of these learning activities includes supporting learner attitudes on the value of lifelong learning;
contributing to the development, maintenance, and enhancement of competent nursing practice;
promoting professional development; and advancing career goals. Nursing professional development
practice is based on the principles of adult education.
Eligibility Criteria

Hold a current, active RN license within a state or territory of the United States or the professional, legally recognized equivalent in another country -
Hold a baccalaureate or higher degree in nursing -
Have practiced the equivalent of two years full time as a registered nurse -
Have a minimum of 4,000 hours of clinical practice in nursing professional development within the last five years -
Have completed 30 hours of continuing education in nursing professional development within the last three years
All requirements must be completed prior to application for the examination.
Credential awarded: RN-BC (Registered Nurse-Board Certified)
