Eligibility
There is no longer an eligibility requirement stipulating that the CNO must be in their current position for one year prior to submission of documentation. Therefore no extensions will be granted for changes in CNO.
Application
Magnet organizations who plan to re-designate should submit an application in the third year of their designation during their anniversary month. The written documentation will be submitted the following year.
All written documentation must comply with the edition of the Magnet Recognition Program Application Manual that is currently in effect at the time of documentation submission.
The application form in the 2005 manual is only a guide. Please download the latest application from our website. (Word: 194KB)
The demographic form in the 2005 manual is only a guide. Please download the latest demographic spreadsheet from our website. (Excel: 127KB)
Instructions for the Demographic Information Form are located on our website under “For Applicants” Downloadable Forms.
The application of intent to submit written documentation may be submitted at any time during the year. The one-year wait before documentation submission is no longer in effect. The dates for written documentation submission have been extended. They are the following:
- February
- April
- June
- August
- October
If the month and/or year that the applicant requests is not available the Magnet Program Office will scheduled the applicant for the next available submission date. Once the Magnet Program Office receives your application they will contact you via certified letter with the month and year you are scheduled for your written documentation submission. The documentation submission date may not be changed. Date changes require a new application.
Nurse Satisfaction Survey
The narrative/trending data/graphs must illustrate how the information is tracked and analyzed, how action plans are developed and evaluated based on the data, and how the direct care nurses are involved in the process. The applicant must:
- collect nurse satisfaction data at the unit level;
- nationally benchmark unit level results against results for units of similar types.
This level of participation will support future research seeking to analyze unit-level characteristics with various types of outcomes.
The last twenty-four (24) months prior to documentation submission should be used to describe the most recent data. The survey does not have to be conducted every year. A cyclic process (about every two (2) years) of data collection, benchmarking, trending over time, implementing action plans, and analysis of outcomes is expected. This information should be included as a source of evidence under Force 1: Quality of Nursing Leadership.
Return of Documents
Written documents and any additional documents are stored in a secure location for five (5) years and destroyed after that time period. The documents will not be returned to the applicant.
Additional Information/Clarification/Documentation
The appraisers MAY request additional information after reviewing the written documentation. This request is usually minimal and is only intended to seek clarification. Applicants who do not initially provide compelling evidence to support the Forces of Magnetism will not be asked for additional documentation.
Research/Evidence-Based Practice
The nursing organization must be able to demonstrate the presence of well established and operationalized structures and processes for research and evidence-based practice. The sources of evidence must demonstrate several examples of the integration and acculturation of evidence-based practice and nursing research by direct care nurses. The Nursing Research Council/Committee or a similar type of structure must be well established. The outcomes from the council or committee must demonstrate how nursing research and evidence-based practice is supported and implemented throughout the organization.
CAUTION:Quality Improvement initiatives should not be presented as Nursing Research evidence. Sources of Evidence that indicate efforts supporting nursing research studies might include approval by the IRB, a nurse as principal investigator, identification of research questions and/or a nursing budget that indicates funding for nursing research as a specific line item.
Site Visit
The site visit is not automatic. The applicant organization's documentation must fall within a range of excellence to move the application to a site visit.
References
Public Comment is now solicited from many sources when a site visit is scheduled. The applicant organization is required to display a public notice and all staff must be notified of the site visit dates and contact information for the Magnet Program Office. The request for six (6) references is no longer a requirement.
