The American Nurses Foundation is pleased to announce the recent publication entitled Food-Safe Schools — Handbook for School Nurses — Prevention, Detection & Management of Foodborne Illnesses. This handbook has been designed specifically for school nurses as a foodborne illness resource and a companion publication to the Food-Safe Schools Action Guide.

The handbook features the role of school nurses in three major areas: The first section: “Prevention of Foodborne Illnesses in Schools” provides guidance on working with a Food-Safe School team, assessing a school’s risk and developing prevention strategies. The second section: “Early Detection of Potential Cases” highlights the importance of a focused nursing assessment, documentation of relevant information and reporting suspicions to key individuals. The third section: “Management of an Outbreak” provides practical strategies for school nurses in five real-life foodborne illness scenarios to facilitate management by a school district and the health department.
