Health Care Reform:
ANA Takes the Lead

ANA developed and aligned policy objectives with political action, with ANA-PAC raising one million dollars and becoming the third largest health care PAC. Nursing has been a strong support of efforts to improve access to health care services and to enhance the quality of care given.

Nursing's Agenda for Health Care Reform ...

developed by ANA and endorsed by nursing organizations, is widely recognized as a visionary plan for the delivery of health care services in the United States.

Home Health

"The most striking aspect of my work has been the truly dedicated, self-sacrificing family member or friend who assumes duty as the primary care giver. I see these people as the unsung heros of home care, acting as the glue that binds some fragile situations. I would like to say thank-you to all of my care givers ..."
Beth Stillwell, RN, Cheektowaga, New York, in The American Nurse (February 1991), p. 5

Silent No Longer

"We're here today to blow the whistle on those in the health care industry who prefer profits over people, administrative bonuses over healing ... The public must know what's going on. That's part of why we're here today."
Virginia Trotter Betts, JD, MSN, RN, ANA President 1992-1996, May 1995 March on Washington, in The American Nurse (April-May 1995), p.1

Who's Taking Care of the Patients?

"One of the main reasons people are treated in hospitals is that they require 24-hour nursing care, and yet hospitals are taking nurses away from the patients. The stakes here are very high and consumers have the right to know who is taking care of them when they are sick and vulnerable."
"Staff Nurses Take Action Against Unsafe Care," The American Nurse (July/August 1995), p. 8

American Nurses Foundation,
"Every Child By Two" Collaboration
Produces "Immunization Partners" Program

"... if we could solve how to provide this basic and most cost-effective preventive health care to our children, in the process, we would have solved how to care to for their other needs ... We must start wherever we are -- we must find the children, reach out our hands to them, encourage them, and help them stay well. Our vision is a nation of healthy, happy, curious and ready-to-learn children who will grow up to become creative, contributing members of our society."
Rosalynn Carter & Betty Bumpers, Co-Founders, "Every Child By Two", in "Immunization Partners: Sustaining the Vision," Conference Proceedings, December 12 & 13, 1994

"... protection begins with the prevention of vaccine-preventable diseases and, hopefully, the creation of a primary health care home. Barriers still exist. Missed population groups abound ... We cannot hope to tackle all of these problems, but we can come to some degree of consensus ... to ensure that children are ready for a healthy life."
Virginia Burggraf, RN, C, MSN, Grants Programs Coordinator, American Nurses Foundation, in "Immunization Partners: Sustaining the Vision," Conference Proceedings, December 12 & 13, 1994
