A Message from ANA President
Rebecca M. Patton MSN, RN, CNOR

The 2006-2007 Influenza Season is quickly approaching. Although many of us do not relish the yearly vaccination experience it is one of the most important actions you can take to safeguard your health and that of your patients and family.

According to a 2005 survey of registered nurses supported by the American Nurses Association, only 5% believe all of their co-workers received an influenza vaccination during the preceding year. In response, the ANA launched the "Everyone Deserves A Shot at Fighting Flu" Campaign in 2005 to urge all nurses and health care workers to get vaccinated against influenza.

ANA renews its efforts to protect nurses and the patients that they serve from this preventable disease by encouraging all nurses to get their influenza vaccination this coming season. Over 100 million vaccine injections will be administered during the 2006-2007 Influenza Season. The frequency of these vaccines and the fact that many of them will be administered at unfamiliar environments increases the risk of needle stick injuries. ANA reminds you to insist on safety needles when participating in influenza vaccination drives. Remember: SAFE NEEDLES, SAVE LIVES!

CDC Urges Health Care Facilities to Vaccinate Employees Against Influenza The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta (CDC) on Thursday, February 26, 2006, recommended that all health care personnel be vaccinated and that employees who refuse to be immunized sign an acknowledgment and declination form. In addition, the CDC recommended that health care employers make influenza vaccinations available to their employees at all hours.
