SAMHSA MFP Celebrates 30 Year Anniversary
The Substance
Abuse and Mental Health Services Administrations (SAMHSA) Minority
Fellowship Program (MFP) celebrated its 30 year anniversary by convening
the First National SAMHSA MFP Conference, December 11 - 13, 2003,
in Washington, DC. The conference theme, Cultural Competence and Reducing
Health Disparities, drew more than 300 current fellows, alumni, government
leaders, mentors, and mental health experts from the core mental health
professional groups: nurses (American Nurses Association), psychologists
(American Psychological Association), psychiatrists (American Psychiatric
Association), social workers (Council on Social Work Education), and
child and adolescent psychiatrists (American Academy of Child and
Adolescent Psychiatry). For three intense days, conference attendees
participated in workshops that focused on Community Based Treatment
and Prevention; Reducing Stigma and Barriers; Children and Families;
Co-Occurring Disorders: Substance Abuse and Treatment and Prevention;
HIV/AIDS; Trauma and Violence; and Cultural Competence and Reducing
Health Disparities. Objectives of the conference were to (1) provide
MFP fellows and alumni with information about organizational structure/processes
that SAMHSA uses to achieve its mission; (2) explore options for fellow
career enhancements; and (3) offer opportunities for the exchange
of scientific knowledge about mental health and substance abuse issues.
