James Collins, PhD, MSME

Dr. James Collins is a Captain in the U.S. Public Health Service and is the Associate Director for Science for the Division of Safety Research (DSR), with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH). Dr. Collins received his Ph.D. in Health Policy and Management from Johns Hopkins University and his Masters and Undergraduate degrees are in Mechanical Engineering. He has 23 years of experience as an Engineer and an Epidemiologist conducting laboratory and field research with the CDC/NIOSH. His recent research has focused on safe resident lifting and slip, trip, and fall prevention in nursing homes and hospitals. As Associate Director for Science for the Division of Safety Research, he is responsible for the quality control of the research being conducted by the Division’s approximately 80 staff members. He is on the editorial board of the International Journal of Injury Control and Safety Promotion. During the past two decades he has authored 5 book chapters and his work has been published in American Journal of Industrial Medicine, Injury Prevention, Ergonomics, Applied Ergonomics, Statistics in Medicine, Occupational Medicine: State of the Art Reviews, Professional Safety, Ohio Monitor, Robotics Engineering, Sensors, Journal of Safety Research, Journal of Occupational Accidents, Public Power Journal, and Business Society and Review.

Kenneth Harwood, PT, PhD, CIE

Dr. Kenneth J. Harwood is presently the Director, Practice Department for the American Physical Therapy Association. In this role, he oversees Association efforts and activities designed to improve and enhance the state of physical therapy practice and has lead the APTA initiatives on the ICF. Formerly, he was the Associate Director and Assistant Professor of Clinical Physical Therapy at the Columbia University Program in Physical Therapy. He earned a BS degree in Physical Therapy from SUNY @ Downstate Medical Center and MA and PhD degrees at the New York University’s Program in Ergonomics and Biomechanics. He became Certified Industrial Ergonomist in 1998. Dr Harwood has published and presented widely on the field of Occupational Health and low back pain care and prevention.

Barbara Silverstein, MSN, PhD, MPH, CPE

Dr. Barbara Silverstein is the Research Direct or of the Washington State Department of Lab or & Industries’ Safety and Health Assessment and Research f or Prevention (SHARP) Program. She received her Bachel or and Master of Science degrees in Nursing from the University of Calif ornia San Francisco, her Master of Public Health in Epidemiology and Environmental and Industrial Health from the University of Michigan, and her PhD in Epidemiologic Science from the University of Michigan. She has w orked on ergonomics-related issues at OSHA, the University of Michigan Center f or Ergonomics, the Finnish Institute of Occupational Health, and the Calif ornia Department of Health Services. Her maj or areas of research have been identification and control of w ork-related musculoskeletal dis orders, comparison of surveillance methods and intervention studies to control these dis orders. She has conducted field research in a number of industries, including health care, electronics, food processing, newspaper publishing, manufacturing, office w ork environment. She serves on a number of national and international commissions and edit orial boards regarding occupational safety and health. She chaired the Washington State Task F orce on Safe Patient Lifting in Health Care to inf orm the legislature f or what became precedent setting safe patient handling legislation in 2006. She received the 2007 Bernice Owen Research Award in Safe Patient Handling and Movement.
