Safe Patient Handling Curriculum Module
Pilot-Test Project

If you and your academic institution are interested in participating in the pilot-test of a safe patient handling curriculum module, you must meet following stipulations. Commitment to meet all requirements below will determine selection as a pilot-test site. Please be aware that current funding resources only allow for a very limited number of nursing schools/colleges to be invited to participate. Should there be an exceeding amount of expressed interest, placement of pilot-test sites will consider a first come, first serve basis.

Selection Criteria:

  1. Must represent an RN program and commit to implementing safe patient handling curriculum module within your nursing school during Fall Semester 2005 and participate in an evaluation study (e.g., interview and survey questionnaire).

  2. Please submit a letter from the Dean or academic head of your school/college of nursing agreeing to full commitment and support of all components of this pilot-test project (including item #4 below) and indicating a willingness to explore potential opportunities to work with state nurses associations that are affiliated with the American Nurses Association.

  3. Must submit a statement (limited to a maximum of 6 pages, typed double-spaced) addressing the following:

Why you and your school/college of nursing wish to participate in this pilot-test project.

How you would implement the pilot curriculum module within your overall fundamental nursing curriculum and clinical simulation/skills laboratory.

How you could commit to sharing and extending the curriculum module (after the pilot-test period) to other schools/colleges of nursing within your community/regional vicinity or professional nursing staff of clinical sites associated with your school.

Describe the type of resources you could draw upon to support the acquisition of safe patient handling equipment (e.g., mechanical lift, transfer devices, gait belts) for your clinical simulation/skills laboratory?

  4. Faculty member responsible for teaching clinical skills (e.g., simulation/skills laboratory instructor) MUST attend the 2005 Safe Patient Handling and Movement Conference and attend both the pre-conference session and post-conference session listed below. 5. Must commit to participating in an evaluation study that will include, but may not be limited to, interviews, written reports, and completion of a survey questionnaire.
