Influenza & PPV Pocket Guides
08/17/06
For the fourth consecutive year, the National Influenza Vaccine Summit is planning to produce the "Influenza Vaccination Pocket Information Guide" for use by healthcare providers nationwide. The purpose of the guide is to provide front-line healthcare personnel with information about indications and contraindications for the injectable and intranasal influenza vaccines, information on targeted populations to be vaccinated, and details on how to administer the vaccines. These guides are not intended for patient use.
More than 1/2 million influenza pocket guides were distributed last year by major medical, nursing, and pharmacist organizations, specialty societies, state health departments, Indian Health Service Area facilities, QIOs, community vaccinators, and others.
But wait! There's more! Immunization Action Coalition (IAC) has also produced the "Pneumococcal Polysaccharide Vaccination Pocket Guide" as a logical adjunct to the influenza guide. It is similarly designed and is printed in lime green and black.
Both pocket guides are available at no cost to your agency or organization. We encourage you to distribute the pocket guide(s) to your members or constituents along with your encouragement to use the guide(s) to avoid missed opportunities.
To order either or both of these guides for your agency or organization in quantity, go to www.immunize.org/pocketguides by August 30, 2006. Shipping occurs in early September.

ANA CE Contact Hour Credit Changes
08/08/06
The American Nurses Association (ANA) is accredited as a provider of continuing nursing education by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation (ANCC). As required by new ANCC criteria, on January 1, 2007, ANA will begin offering 60-minute contact hours and will no longer provide 50-minute contact-hour credit. According to ANCC, “This change brings greater consistency with the accreditation processes of other disciplines and increases the understanding and intuitiveness of the awarding of contact hours.”
To estimate the number of contact hours for an educational activity, total the minutes of didactic or clinical experience and evaluating the activity and divide by 60. For example, 60 minutes = 1 CH, 150 minutes = 2.5 CH, etc. If you need information about re-certification or re-licensure CH requirements, please contact your certification board or state board of nursing. For questions about ANA’s change to a 60-minute contact hour, please e-mail valerie.restifo@ana.org. ANA's Online CEs...

New Impaired Nurses Resource Center
08/04/06
The Impaired Nurses Resource Center is the newest addition to NursingWorld, ANA's official Web site. The Resource Center offers assistance not only to those nurses who have chemical dependencies, but to those who wonder if they might. It provides ethical guidance for the individual, regarding obligations not only to the patient, but also that one has to one’s self, as well. It offers ethical guidelines, also, for co-workers who suspect a colleague of impaired practice.
Links are provided to ANA’s constituent member associations, many of which offer “peer assistance” or “alternative to discipline” programs in conjunction with the state boards of nursing, to which we also offer links. We have also included some of the exemplary programs offered by nursing specialties, with more to be added. Lastly, the new webpage offers dozens of links to resources for impaired nurses, including those organizations specializing in addiction and recovery, emphasizing programs for nurses. ANA Supports Covering Kids & Families Campaign
08/02/06
More than 8 million children in the United States do not have health coverage. Most of these children are eligible for Medicaid or the State Children’s Health Insurance Program (SCHIP), but their parents may not realize that the children qualify. ANA has joined Covering Kids & Families, a national initiative of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation designed to increase the number of children and adults who benefit from federal and state health coverage programs.
On August 9, 2006, Covering Kids & Families will kick off its seventh annual Back-to-School Campaign to encourage parents to enroll their eligible, uninsured children in Medicaid or SCHIP as an important part of getting them ready for the new school year. During August and September, events will take place in all 50 states and the District of Columbia and will include public service announcements, media outreach, and corporate and organizational partnerships to get the word out to parents that low-cost or free health care coverage may be available for their uninsured children. The campaign and its partners reach millions of families
If you are interested in getting involved in this important campaign in your state, visit the Covering Kids & Family Web site at http://coveringkidsandfamilies.org/whatyoucando/ to see what you can do. Check out the events page to see what is happening in your state.
