Spotlight on the 2006 House of Delegates - Day Three
06/25/06
The House of Delegates (HOD) came to a close June 25 after more than 600 delegates elected a new ANA president and other key posts and again took action on vital nursing and health care issues.

In her first public address as ANA president, Rebecca "Becky" Patton, MSN, RN, CNOR, from the Ohio Nurses Association, called for nurses to share her vision of unity, partnership and balance.

"I ask you to join me and unite," Patton said. "Let's continue to elevate our association to one of prominence, importance and relevancy."

Patton also acknowledged her mother, longtime nurse advocate Mary Ellen Patton, RN, for instilling in her a love and appreciation for nursing and participation in her professional associations.

In other actions, delegates approved a resolution calling on ANA to continue to affirm the authority of all RNs and advanced practice registered nurses to practice fully, and to continue to oppose physician groups' ongoing attempt to exert influence and control over nursing practice.

Delegates also approved motions from the floor for ANA to reaffirm the right of RNs to be represented for collective bargaining and to work to eliminate messages in commercials that promote violence.

Spotlight on the 2006 ANA House of Delegates - Day Two
06/24/06
In her address to the HOD June 24, ANA's Chief Executive Officer Linda J. Stierle, MSN, RN, CNAA, BC, described how the theme of National Nurses Week - "Strength, Commitment, Compassion" - fits so well with nurses' professional lives.

"Today's nurses must have the strength to care for patients during times of disaster and crisis," Stierle said. "They must have the commitment to remain involved in continuing education throughout their careers - especially as we move into a new world of rapidly changing technology. And they must have the compassion that it takes to provide hands-on patient care despite the work environment challenges we face every day."

She also spoke about the collaborative relationship between ANA and its CMAs that's growing stronger through its "Partnership Plan," and urged nurses, who were present, to reach out to their colleagues to help build membership.

"More members mean more influence - on Capitol Hill and in federal and state agencies, and in the hospital and in your state legislatures," Stierle said.

Delegates also took action on several resolutions, including one that honors nurses, who routinely respond to disasters, and promotes strengthening response efforts with nurse input; another that promotes effective strategies to address a potential influenza pandemic and seasonal influenza; and another that's designed to address the vast problem of uncontrolled pain by promoting effective pain management strategies.

Spotlight on the 2006 ANA House of Delegates
06/23/06
Several hundred nurse leaders from around the country gathered in Washington, DC, to attend the opening of ANA's House of Delegates (HOD) June 23.

"We should be so proud of what we have accomplished together over the last couple of years," said ANA President Barbara A Blakeney, MS, RN, in her opening remarks. "As nurses, we play a daily role that is so critical in the lives of so many people."

Blakeney specifically pointed to the efforts of ANA, its constituent member associations (CMAs) and individual nurses related to the Gulf Coast disasters.

"Nurses respond when disasters strike, and our patients know we are there for them," she said. Blakeney also emphasized that ANA is continuing to advocate for an improved, coordinated response to future disasters, as well as to a potential influenza pandemic.

She also spoke about ANA's ongoing work, including its fight to ensure nurses remain in control of their practice so they can provide the services people need.

And for the second year, the HOD included its annual "Nightingale Tribute." As part of the ceremony, representatives from the CMAs read aloud the names of their deceased colleagues who have passed since the last HOD. ANA noted the death of Margretta "Gretta" Madden Styles, renowned nurse leader and a past president of ANA, the International Council of Nurses and the American Nurses Credentialing Center.

ANA also unveiled a new symbol for nursing and the association - a flag with a lantern surrounded by 54 stars representing the CMAs. The flag reflects "pride in ANA, and its legacy and contributions to the nursing profession," Blakeney said.

Latest OJIN Information Resources Column
06/21/06
"Open Access: The Dust Hasn’t Settled Yet," is the latest OJIN: The Online Journal of Issues in Nursing, Information Resources Column. In this column, Barbara Schloman discusses the concept of open access. Open access is a movement to provide free and ready access to scholarly literature. It envisions the Internet as an online commons providing unrestricted access for all and the possibility of a different publishing model that would eliminate journal subscription costs. Various varieties of open access have emerged, but as yet there is not a clear sense of how it will all shake out.
