The Nursing Insider: May 2006
Current News Past News

One Year Remains Before NPI Use is Required in All Standard Transactions
05/31/06
Covered health care providers have one year to obtain National Provider Identifiers (NPI). The NPI is a 10-digit, numeric identifier that does not expire or change, and is administered by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS).

The NPI must be used in standard health care transactions, specified by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA) no later than May 23, 2007, by covered health care providers, health plans and health clearinghouses.

The identifier helps to ensure that medical claims are processed on time and payments are made correctly.

Health care providers are urged to apply for the National Provider Identifier (NPI) well before the May 23, 2007 deadline. Legacy identifiers will not be accepted after that date (except for small health plans who have until May 23, 2008 to comply).

The Medicare fee-for-service program began accepting the NPI, along with the Medicare legacy identifiers, from health care providers in HIPAA standard claims transactions in January 2006.

Health care providers may obtain their NPI in one of three ways:

  1. Apply on-line by using the web (https://NPPES.cms.hhs.gov);
  2. Call the NPI Enumerator (1-800-465-3203) and request a paper NPI application form, complete it, and mail it back to the address on the form; or
  3. Apply for a bulk enumeration, which allows an Electronic File Interchange Organization (EFIO) approved by CMS to obtain a number of providers’ NPI.

We encourage providers to go to www.cms.hhs.gov/NationalProvIdentStand/ to get the information they need in order to apply for this new unique identifier.

2006 ANA Elections
05/16/06
Attention Nurses! As Nurses Week culminates, it is important to remember you can show your strength, commitment, and compassion to the profession of nursing by becoming a candidate for ANA elected office. By ensuring that your packet arrives at ANA Headquarters by May 31, 2006, and that you meet the required qualifications, your profile and statement of views will be included in the final edition of the Candidates’ Profiles Guide. This edition will be available onsite to all delegates.

Remember, this year there are additional chances for nurse members to get involved and influence the profession and policy through the 35 elected positions on the Congress on Nursing Practice and Economics.

Please note that in addition to the three openings, the HOD will be filling a vacancy in the director-at-large position vacated by Linda Beechinor. The fourth highest “vote-getter” in the election for director-at-large will be declared elevated to fill this vacancy for the remainder of the term (2006-2008). This is keeping with ANA Bylaws.

ANA members must create an online account at Members Only to access the 2006 ANA Election Materials. Members already registered on the Members Only site can log on and access the 2006 ANA Election Materials.

    05/09/06

It strips coverage that consumers have and depend on, eliminates key health care benefits and guaranteed access to Advanced Practice Registered Nurses, and raises the cost in health insurance for those most in need of care. There is no evidence that this legislation would ensure any real expansion of health insurance coverage, or that it would lead to more affordable health insurance for small businesses. Act Now...
