Health Care Without Harm (HCWH) is announcing round five of the 2006-2007 Nurses Workgroup Mini-Grant Program. The Mini-Grant program is designed to support innovative efforts to expand and deepen the involvement of nurses in environmental health issues, to promote advocacy activities and to encourage those initiatives that showcase collaborative efforts between nurses and environmental organizations. ANA Comments on Nursing Care During Hurricane Katrina

ANA is very supportive of the nurses who stayed and cared for patients during and after Hurricane Katrina in September, 2005, as well as nurses who supported these efforts in other ways. Disasters place nurses in unfamiliar and unusual conditions within the health care environment that may necessitate adaptations to recognized standards of nursing practice. New CE Module Focuses on Disaster Response

"The Impact of Disaster on Nurse Responders" is the newest online CE offering from ANA. This module is designed to discuss the impact of natural disasters on nurse responders/providers and to identify interventions to help them overcome any stress/anxiety symptoms they may experience. This module is offerred FREE to ANA Members in NursingWorld's Members Only section. On successful completion of this independent study module, the learner will be able to:

  1. Explain the psychological impact of natural disasters on nurse responders/providers.
  2. Describe the physiological changes that occur during the stress reaction.
  3. Discuss interventions proven to be helpful to individuals experiencing stress related symptoms following natural disasters.

RWJF Seeks Proposals to Address the Nursing Shortage

To alleviate the challenges contributing to the nation's nursing shortage, the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) and Northwest Health Foundation have announced a new round of funding opportunities through the "Partners Investing in Nursing's Future" initiative. Through this program, local and regional foundations will receive funding to support collaborations among nurses, workforce investment boards and community organizations on a variety of projects, including initiatives that bolster diversity, long term care, public health, educational infrastructure/faculty shortage and mid-level management. The program will award 10 two-year grants of up to $250,000 each. The application deadline is November 9, 2006. SAMHSA Announces Availability of a New Brochure

The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration's (SAMHSA's) Center for Substance Abuse Treatment recently released English- and Spanish-language versions of a new brochure, Drugs, Alcohol and HIV/AIDS: A Consumer Guide. The brochure is for substance abuse treatment program clients who may be involved in risky behaviors associated with HIV/AIDS. The information in the brochure is based on Treatment Improvement Protocol 37, Substance Abuse Treatment for Persons With HIV/AIDS. The brochure answers questions such as:

  • What do drugs and alcohol have to do with HIV?
  • What if I already have HIV?
  • What if I can't stop using drugs or alcohol?
  • What if I can't handle all of this alone?

In addition, helpful phone numbers and Web links are listed on the back cover of the brochure, along with a reference to SAMHSA's Treatment Facility Locator www.findtreatment.samhsa.gov.

PBS Series, Remaking American Medicine

Remaking American MedicineThe American Nurses Association (ANA) is an active participant in the Institute for Healthcare Improvement's 100,000 Lives Campaign. The Campaign will be prominently featured in the first installment of a four-part PBS series entitled Remaking American Medicine, airing in October. The first program, Silent Killer, highlights the urgent need to “fix” the US health care system, to prevent harm to patients, and how Campaign hospitals have taken the lead by implementing six critical, life-saving interventions. In doing so, the TV series is a tribute to the great work of our hospitals and lets our community know that we are deeply committed to better patient care. We hope that you will watch and encourage your family and friends to watch, too. The four one-hour programs are scheduled to air on PBS on October 5, 12, 19 and 26 at 10 p.m. (check local listings). Online Genetics Education Opportunity

Cincinnati Children's Hospital has posted a free Continuing Education Module for Nurses on Genetics. The module entitled “Genetics is Relevant Now: Nurses' Views and Patients' Stories” was pilot tested with a national nursing audience. Cindy Prows, MSN, RN, a clinical nurse specialist at Cincinnati Children's Hospital and the Program Director for the Genetics Education Program for Nurses notes that comments from the pilot testing of the module were extremely positive. Comments by nurses included statements such as “I wish every nurse in the US could go through this module” and Excellent! The stories were great and very informative."

Cindy Prows is an active ANA member and the 2006 recipient of the Michael Scotti award present by the National Center for Health Professions Education in Genetics (NCHPEG). The award is for contributions to genetics education for health professionals. Ms. Prows substantive and enduring leadership in genetics education for nurses and her many contributions to NCHPEG's programs and activities were recognized.

The module is available for nursing contact hours with “No processing fee”. Registered nurses who complete the content, 10 item post test, and evaluation will receive 1.5 nursing contact hours. The CE certificate can be printed after completing all components of the module. To access the module, click on the following link and then scroll down the page to the title of the module www.cincinnatichildrens.org/ed/clinical/gpnf/ce/skill/default.htm. After you click on the title, you will need to create your own username and password to access the module.

ANA supports continuing education in genetics for all nurses and is a partner in the development of the Essential Nursing Competencies and Curricula Guidelines for Genetics and Genomics which can be viewed on the Center for Ethics and Human Rights pages of www.nursingworld.org/ethics/genetics. A meeting to develop an implementation plan for the genomics core competencies for nurses will be held at the ANA headquarters in Silver Spring on October 23-23, 2005. ANA Backs ICN Call for Action to Resolve the Case of Five Bulgarian Nurses and Palestinian Physician Wrongfully Detained in Libya

The American Nurses Association (ANA) today joined the International Council of Nurses (ICN) in its call for a just, fair and expeditious trial of the five Bulgarian nurses and a Palestinian doctor who were wrongfully charged by Libyan authorities for allegedly infecting Libyan children with HIV. ANA, as the professional association for registered nurses and the U.S. representative to the ICN, has been gravely concerned about these detained colleagues whom we believe to be innocent; as well as for the infected children and their families. NEETF's New Website and Environmental Health Tools for Pediatric Health Care Providers

The National Environmental Education & Training Foundation (NEETF) is pleased to announce the launch of its new website and environmental health training tools for pediatric health care providers. The site was developed as part of the Children's Environmental Health Faculty Champions Initiative, which aims to build health professional capacity to address children's environmental health issues. The website features PowerPoint Presentations and Resources developed by leading experts in the field of pediatric environmental health education. These materials were originally used to train pediatric faculty members who participated in the Children's Environmental Health Faculty Champions Train-the-Trainer workshop on July 14, 2006. The presentations offer an overview of many of the environmental health topics most frequently encountered by pediatric health care providers, including: children's unique vulnerabilities to environmental health risks, environmental history taking, asthma, tobacco smoke, ultraviolet light, pesticides, lead and mercury. The website also includes a comprehensive list of NEETF's environmental health publications for health care providers, as well as selected environmental health resources from a variety of other sources. Call to Action: Bulgarian Nurses on Trial in Libya

ICN 2007 Conference - Deadline for Abstracts

This is the final week to submit abstracts for The International Council of Nurses (ICN) 2007 Conference in Yokohama, Japan (May 27- June 1, 2007).

To share your ideas, research and expertise on how to provide quality nursing care, improve health care practice, policies and services or contribute to the discussion of nurses dealing with the unexpected, you are invited to submit abstracts. Abstracts must address one of the sub-themes and demonstrate a direct link to the Conference theme. Deadline for the receipt of abstracts is 12 midnight GMT September 15, 2006.
