U.S. Campaign to Ban Landmines

President Bush is presently considering policy action with regard to the U.S. signing the United Nations Mine Ban Treaty. ANA, as part of the U.S. Campaign to Ban Landmines, urges you to contact your Senator and request that he or she contact the White House and urge President Bush to ban landmines and NOT accept recent Defense Department recommendations to abandon efforts to join the 1997 Mine Ban Treaty. For an action alert tailored to your state, please email banmines@phrusa.org with your name, email address and mailing address. A letter will be sent to you via email tailored to your audience. If you live in Iowa or Vermont, both Senators Harken and Leahy have already sent letters to the White House.

Back in 1998, the ANA Board of Directors affirmed ANA's support of and participation in the U.S. Campaign to Ban Landmines. At the time, ANA requested that the International Council of Nurses (ICN) also take a position on the Mine Ban Treaty. In 1999, the ICN Board of Directors passed the position statement: Towards Elimination of Weapons of War and Conflict, which includes support for the ban on landmines.

ANA realizes that you are busy with very specific nursing issues, but we hope that you can find time to put this out to your networks and generate some letters.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact Cheryl Peterson at cpeterso@ana.org or 202/651-7089.
