Bioterrorism and Disaster Response: Tsunami Emergency

RNs Needed to Volunteer for Tsunami Relief in South Asia

ANA has been working closely with the Bush administration and leading health care organizations to coordinate the U.S. disaster-relief response to the tsunamis in southern Asia. On Jan. 7, ANA participated in a meeting held by Health and Human Services Secretary Tommy Thompson to update the health care community on the response effort. At the meeting, Thompson announced that the U.S. naval ship Mercy is heading to the region Jan. 26 and will be staffed by volunteer health care teams sent from the U.S.

In addition, ANA is working with the International Council of Nurses, which has been in contact with the member national nurses associations (NNAs) in the countries most severely affected by the earthquake and tsunamis in South Asia. The NNAs of Indonesia, Sri Lanka and Thailand, in turn, are working closely with their communities and national relief operations to assist populations that are recovering from the disaster.

In order to facilitate and streamline the donations process for donors and relieve communications and administrative burdens, ICN's website will serve as a focal point for national nurses associations that donate funds directly to the national nurses associations of Sri Lanka, Indonesia and Thailand. To make donations, follow the links on the ICN Website at www.icn.ch.

The first 30-day volunteer humanitarian assistance mission leaves Jan. 26 on the U.S. naval ship Mercy. Other 30-day missions will follow over the next three months. To apply, e-mail a résumé to recruitment@projecthope.org and note "Tsunami Relief" and your specialty in the subject line and your availability in the text. Details on how to apply
