ANA Joins forces with U.S. Chamber of Commerce and 11 Major National Organizations to Seek Solutions
2/12/02
A new report released today estimates that at least two million Americans lost their health insurance in 2001, the largest one-year increase in the number of uninsured in nearly 10 years. The release of the report, compiled by Families USA, was tied to the launch of Covering the Uninsured, a national campaign designed to raise awareness of the challenges facing the more than 39 million Americans with no health insurance.
The Covering the Uninsured campaign comprises The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) along with ANA and 11 other national organizations that have come together to seek solutions to the problem of the uninsured. In addition to the RWJF and ANA, the partnership includes the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, AFL-CIO, The Business Roundtable, Service Employees International Union, American Medical Association, Health Insurance Association of America, Families USA, American Hospital Association, Federation of American Hospitals, Catholic Health Association of the United States and AARP.
In addition to releasing the new data, Covering the Uninsured announced a new $10 million advertising campaign and launched a new Web site -- www.coveringtheuninsured.org.

The average American is acutely aware of the nation's nursing shortage and believes the problem is serious, according to a national poll released yesterday by Vanderbilt University Medical Center's School of Nursing and Center for Health Services Research. In the poll, more
than eight in 10 Americans are aware of the nursing shortage, nearly two-thirds believe it is a problem or crisis, and 93 percent are concerned that it jeopardizes quality of care.
97% of respondents have a favorable view of nurses and the nursing profession, and 83% would encourage a loved one to pursuenursing as a career. On the down side, however, the study also revealed a general lack of knowledge regarding the nursing profession and the nature of the job.
The telephone poll involving 1,005 American adults was commissioned by Johnson & Johnson in conjunction with its launch of a national nursing advertising and recruitment campaign. The $20 million advertising and promotional campaign is designed to recruit more people into the profession. The campaign was developed with national nursing organizations and ANA President Mary Foley, MS, RN, is an advisor to the campaign.
