Poll Reveals Widespread Concern Over Nursing Shortage; Recruitment Campaign Launched

2/8/02

The average American is acutely aware of the nation's nursing shortage and believes the problem is serious, according to a national poll released yesterday by Vanderbilt University Medical Center's School of Nursing and Center for Health Services Research. In the poll, more than eight in 10 Americans are aware of the nursing shortage, nearly two-thirds believe it is a problem or crisis, and 93 percent are concerned that it jeopardizes quality of care.

97% of respondents have a favorable view of nurses and the nursing profession, and 83% would encourage a loved one to pursuenursing as a career. On the down side, however, the study also revealed a general lack of knowledge regarding the nursing profession and the nature of the job.

The telephone poll involving 1,005 American adults was commissioned by Johnson & Johnson in conjunction with its launch of a national nursing advertising and recruitment campaign. The $20 million advertising and promotional campaign is designed to recruit more people into the profession. The campaign was developed with national nursing organizations and ANA President Mary Foley, MS, RN, is an advisor to the campaign.
