Cambridge, New York - Celebrating National Nurses Week
4/30/01
We are a small rural health care facility that is going through some serious financial stress. There is not a lot of money to buy "extras" however, our entire staff, including the nursing staff is very proud of our hospital and try hard to provide the best possible care. Our physicians have donated some funds that will be used to purchase mementoes for the nurses and the assistants (we'll celebrate now rather than in June).
The senior nurses will be buying ice cream and toppings and will go door-to-door throughout all of the sections of McClellan Health System providing a nice ice cream snack to celebrate nursing.
Finally, each member of our nursing staff will bring in some perennial plants and plant them on our campus. That way they can celebrate nurses' week, beautify our grounds after a harsh Winter when there are not funds available to purchase plants, and demonstrate their pride in this historic organization (founded 1917.)

Fiscal Year (FY) 2002 Funding Recommendations for Nurse Education and Research
04/30/01
The nursing profession is facing a staffing crisis, caused in part by a lack of young people entering the profession and an aging workforce. The results of a recent study conducted by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), Health Resources and Services Administration are consistent with ANA research regarding patient outcomes and nurse staffing -- patients fare better when RNs play a significant role in the staffing mix. The HHS study revealed that strong and consistent relationships were found between hospital nurse staffing levels and five patient outcomes - urinary track infections, shock, length of stay, upper gastrointestinal bleeding and pneumonia. These adverse outcomes were reduced by 3 to 12 percent when there were higher numbers of RNs in the staffing mix. A decrease of 2 to 25 percent of these adverse outcomes also was associated with higher staffing levels of all nurses. These results are consistent with the ANA study "Nurse Staffing and Patient Outcomes in the Inpatient Hospital Setting," http://www.nursingworld.org/pressrel/2000/st0504.htm, which revealed that adverse conditions, similar to the ones used in the HHS study, markedly decreased with higher levels of RN involvement in patient care.
