June 2002 AJN Examines Nurse-Physician Relationships

5/30/02
Approaching a topic that has long been a source of commentary and controversy, the June 2002 American Journal of Nursing features a multi-site survey of nurses, physicians and administrators on their perceptions of nurse-physician relationships, as well as the incidence of "physician disruptive behaviors" and their impact on nurse morale, satisfaction and retention. The survey revealed that the perceptions of physicians differed significantly from those of nurses and administrators, with physicians often underestimating the problem and its impact.

The June issue also includes articles on incontinence and overactive bladder, the use of exercise to effectively manage diabetes, and tularemia, an infectious disease that can be transmitted by a tick or a bioterrorist attack. And don't miss ANA's columns: "Health and Safety" on musculoskeletal injuries and handling and moving patients safely; "Issues Update" on the impact of the Bush Administration on federal regulations impacting nursing; and "Washington Watch" on a public reporting quality initiative in nursing homes.

ICN Reports on Workplace Violence against Healthcare Workers

5/21/02
The International Council of Nurses (ICN), working in conjunction with the International Labor Organization (ILO), the World Health Organization (WHO), and Public Services International (PSI), released research data that indicates violence undermines retention of health personnel and the delivery of quality of care everywhere. While known to be a serious problem in the industrialized world, this research indicates that violence in the health care workplace is a global phenomena. The research focused on Brazil, Bulgaria, Lebanon, Portugal, South Africa, and Thailand. Overall, more than have of the health sector personnel surveyed had experienced at least one incident of physical or psychological violence in the year previous to the study. ICN, ILO, WHO, and PSI are presently developing guidelines taking a preventive, remedial, participative and systematic approach to address workplace violence. For additional information, go to http://www.icn.ch/PR10_02.htm.

Weekend Immersion in Nursing Informatics (WINI) - June 8-9, 2002

5/17/02
What is WINI? WINI is the Weekend Immersion in Nursing Informatics event developed by three informatics nurses now certified in nursing informatics by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC). The 2002 WINI program follows the content outline for the ANCC nursing informatics certification examination. The program's success was responsible, in part, for the creation of the US government grant to fund nursing informatics courses for nurse educators.

This workshop taken place at the Grand Hyatt Washington in Washington, DC is an opportunity to examine key concepts for nursing informatics. Throughout the event, there will be ample opportunity to network with faculty members and peers about nursing informatics issues. Participants will learn about the challenges other nurses face and the nursing informatics strategies they use to meet those challenges.

For more information and please visit www.aorn.org/events or call AORN at 800-755-2676.

Mid-Atlantic Region's Nursing Deficit Deepening

5/15/02
The Washington Post reports that Maryland hospitals have experienced an increase in nurse vacancy rates for the third consecutive year, while D.C. hospitals say they continue to work on filling their nursing stations. In Virginia, hospitals are offering flexible hours, such as three 12-hour workdays, higher pay for odd work shifts and benefits for nurses who work less than full time to enable them to capture younger nurses and those looking to work around family schedules.

According to the American Hospital Association, the nursing vacancies have exacerbated hospital staff shortages across the mid-Atlantic region. Nearly half of its mid-Atlantic members reported that emergency rooms were operating over their capacity, and 60 percent of those hospitals were forced to divert ambulances to other facilities.

RWJF Issues Nursing Shortage Report

5/13/02
According to a new report, Health Care's Human Crisis: The American Nursing Shortage, commissioned by The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) the current nursing drought is not like previous shortages, it is about to get worse, and the tried and true solutions of the past are unlikely to solve it.

The study finds the current situation fundamentally different from those in the past, reflecting dissatisfaction with the profession by nurses and competition from other career opportunities for women.

The report, which offers recommendations for turning this critical shortage around, is available free online at The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Web site, http://www.rwjf.org/special/nursingshortage.

New Website to Help in the Search for Government Benefits and Assistance

5/08/02
U.S. Senator Larry Craig, ranking member of the Special Committee on Aging, says a new site on the Internet will help the public, especially seniors and their family members, and other members of the public identify federal programs designed to help them. The new computer program was launched on April 29 by the U.S. Department of Labor, and the Office of Management and Budget. For more information log on to http://www.govbenefits.gov/.

FDA's Center for Devices and Radiological Health (CDRH)

5/06/02
FDA's Center for Devices and Radiological Health (CDRH) has developed a new pilot educational program to educate health care professionals about patient safety issues. "FDA Patient Safety News" is a monthly, 15 minute television program airing on healthcare education networks including Health Science Television Network (HSTN), Long Term Care Network (LTCN), VA's Education Network, and GE TiP TV. The programs provide information on significant new approvals, product recalls, safety alerts, and tips for improving patient safety.

The focus of FDA Patient Safety News is to help give health care personnel the information they need to protect patients and use medical products safely. There are cases in which the information that the show provides may require immediate action, such as removing a recalled item from stock, or carrying out the recommendations of a Safety Alert, or following a "safety tip." Sometimes the knowledge gained from an episode may mean knowing about which new product to use and when. Current episodes may be viewed at www.fda.gov/cdrh/psn or tapes may be requested from PSNews@cdrh.fda.gov.
