Last week the Department of Labor (DOL) announced in the Federal Register three public forums "to discuss possible approaches to addressing ergonomic hazards in the workplace." A long-awaited DOL standard on Ergonomics was repealed by both houses of Congress last spring and leaves nurses unprotected from disabling back injuries. Worker advocacy groups, including ANA, recently petitioned the Secretary of Labor, Elaine Chao to again take up the issue of ergonomics and have the Occupational Safety and Health Administration issue a standard.
The public forums on ergonomics will be held on July 16 and 17 at George Mason University in Northern Virginia, July 20 at the University of Chicago and July 24 at Stanford University in California. Information can be found at the OSHA web site http://www.osha-slc.gov/ergonomics-standard/index.html.
ANA submitted our notice of intent to speak at the hearings and is awaiting confirmation of the location and time. We will once again be calling upon nurses to communicate the need for a strong, preventive standard to prevent disabling back injuries among nurses to the regulatory agencies and congress. Watch for upcoming notices on NursingWorld.

Carol J. Bickford, Senior Policy Fellow in the Department of Nursing Practice and Policy at ANA, joined two American informatics nurse colleagues in presenting the June 15-17, 2001, Weekend Immersion in Nursing Informatics (WINI) Conference in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.
Forty seven nurses from Canada, Pakistan and the US participated in this continuing education event which was sponsored by the Ontario Nursing Informatics Group (ONIG). Discussions focused on networking, problem solving, and sharing about nursing and informatics issues and lessons learned. Participants also discussed recent Canadian legislative and regulatory, informatics competencies, and telehealth initiatives. Because American vendors provide many of the clinical and healthcare information systems for Canadian facilities, the nurses' issues and concerns are comparable to those encountered in the US. Many of the Canadian nurses already use the ANA nursing informatics scope and standards publications and eagerly await the upcoming revision, especially as they develop new position descriptions and Canadian standards of nursing informatics practice. Questions also surfaced about which products have received NIDSEC recognition.

The American Nurses Association's Department of Government Affairs, (GOVA) has put forward the first two nominations of 2001 for Federal Appointments. MCAC, and it's 120 advisory panels review and evaluate medical literature, review technical assessments, and examined date and information on the effectiveness and appropriatensess of medical items and services that are covered under Medicare. The panels develop technical advice to aid in determining reasonable and necessary applications of medical services and technology when they make national coverage decisions for Medicare.
Dr. Jacobs has an extensive background in clinical and scholarly research in the areas of critical care, home care, administration, and the ethics of health care. Ms. Woodhead has 26 years of progressive adminstrative and clinical experience in the field of health care information technology.
The 2001 ANA Federal Appointments Project is an exciting opportunity for nurses to become involved in the process. The Department of Government Affairs would like to ensure that qualified nurses are appointed to posts at all levels and in all Departments of the new Administration. The project is a labor-intensive effort to gather and screen resumes of qualified nurses, and to actively promote appointments within the Administration. GOVA is proud of its nurses, and invites you all to think about and submit names of nurses who would be qualified for a presidential appointment.
