NINR 20th Anniversary Science Symposium

The National Institute of Nursing Research (NINR) invites you to join them for an exciting scientific symposium marking the kick-off celebration of NINR's 20th Anniversary. This event will be held in conjunction with the Council for the Advancement of Nursing Science Special Topics Conference. The symposium will be presented in the main auditorium at the Natcher Conference Center on the NIH campus in Bethesda, Maryland on October 11, 2005. There is no charge to attend.

University of Maryland School of Nursing to Partner with Shady Grove Adventist Hospital in New Program to Help Alleviate Nurse Faculty Shortage

In 2003, nearly 2,000 qualified applicants were denied admission to associate degree and baccalaureate nursing programs in Maryland, due primarily to lack of faculty. To address this critical and growing health workforce problem, the University of Maryland School of Nursing is partnering with Shady Grove Adventist Hospital (SGAH) in a new initiative, Teach for the Health of It, a unique grant with the Department of Labor, Licensing and Regulation to move a significant number of Registered Nurses (RNs) into faculty positions in a short period of time.

American Nurses Association Delegates Take Action to Improve Health Care, Protect the Vulnerable and Advance Nursing

Report Finds Most Elderly Do Not Have Assets Sufficient to Pay For a One Year Nursing Home Stay

The issue paper, "The Distribution of Assets in the Elderly Population Living in the Community," by the Kaiser Commission on Medicaid and the Uninsured examines the assets of elderly individuals living in the community who are at highest risk for needing nursing home care. The paper finds 84% of the elderly most likely to need nursing home care would exhaust their assets within one year in a nursing home. Further, most elderly individuals do not have enough assets to pay for one year or more of nursing home care.

New OJIN Article -- Vigilance: The Essence of Nursing

In the latest article from the Online Journal of Issues in Nursing (OJIN), authors Meyer and Lavin discuss professional vigilance as the essence of caring in nursing. They call for two types of nursing diagnoses, central and surveillance, to expand standardized nursing diagnosis terminology so that the contribution to patient safety by the vigilance of nurses may be effectively communicated and documented. JCAHO Standard Will Require Documenting Patients' Communication Needs
6/22/05
Beginning in January 2006, the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO) will require hospitals and other health care organizations to document each patient’s language and communication needs in the patient’s medical record, along with other key patient information.

The National Nurses Survey on Health and Chemical Exposures
6/21/05
This survey explores the relationship between a nurse's health and on-the-job exposures to chemicals, drugs and other harmful agents. Until September 30, 2005, nurses will be able to enter information online about their workplace experiences and exposures. Nurses will also be able to download information related to hazardous substances and alternative products.

Newly Developed Robot Assists Doctors and Nurses in Operating Room

In a successful procedure at New York-Presbyterian Hospital/The Allen Pavilion, a robot for the first time functioned as an independent assistant to the surgical team by handing and retrieving surgical instruments. The robot, known as the Penelope™ Surgical Instrument Server (SIS), was designed and developed by Robotic Surgical Tech, Inc. (RST) of New York. The robot will assist nurses and surgeons, but will have no direct patient contact.

Older Americans Less Willing to Sacrifice Physician-Hospital Choice to Save Costs
6/16/05
Elderly Americans are much less willing than working-age Americans to limit their choice of physicians and hospitals to save on out-of-pocket medical costs, according to findings from a new national study by the Center for Studying Health System Change (HSC). In 2003, only 45 percent of seniors 65 and older were willing to trade broad provider choice to save money, compared with 70 percent of people aged 18 through 34, the study found.

National Medical and Public Health Groups Sue EPA to Prevent Future Mercury Exposure

ICN Elects New President

Hiroko Minami, outstanding nursing leader in Japan and internationally, has been elected as the 25th President of the International Council of Nurses (ICN). The election took place during the 23rd ICN Quadrennial Congress. Dr. Minami is the immediate past President of the Japanese Nurses Association and Director of the Japanese Academy of Nursing Science. She has worked extensively in psychiatric nursing, education, research, and administration.

Also, a new ICN Board was elected at the Council of National Representatives meeting. The 14-member board will serve for 4 years and includes Dr. William Holzemer, the American Nurses Foundation's board president.

Older Adults Less Likely to Care for Parents than Younger and Middle-Aged Adults

University of Missouri-Columbia (MU) researchers found that while young and middle-aged adults today believe they should help and care for aging parents, adults over the age of 65 are less likely to think that aging adults should be helped by younger family members.

Larry Ganong, professor of nursing, and Marilyn Coleman, professor of human development and family studies, surveyed more than 3,300 adults over four years, asking them questions while describing scenarios where an older parent or stepparent needed help with either physical care, financial aid or other obligations.

National Fluoridation Symposium 2005

As part of the 60th anniversary celebration of community water fluoridation, the ADA, in conjunction with the CDC, will host the National Fluoridation Symposium 2005 in Chicago on July 13-16.

A host of interested parties will gather - from researchers, medical and dental professionals, public health officials, educators, community leaders and legislators - to anyone with an interest in improving public health in their community. The symposium is open to the pubic.

This symposium will (1) facilitate the update and transfer of current science surrounding fluoridation; (2) allow for sharing of legislative and legal strategies as they relate to fluoridation; (3) establish a national fluoridation dialogue and (4) refocus efforts on securing water fluoridation for U.S. communities. Nursing Faculty, Students Find Unique Way to Help Tsunami Victims

Nursing faculty and students at the University of Missouri-Columbia's Sinclair School of Nursing and members of District 7 of the Missouri Nurses Association (MONA) will ship 32 boxes of donated nursing textbooks to help restock the Eastern University of Sri Lanka's Nursing School library, which was devastated by the recent tsunami.

CDC Recommends Meningococcal Vaccine for Adolescents and College Freshmen

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has recommended that children 11-12 years old, unvaccinated adolescents entering high school, and college freshmen living in dormitories routinely receive a newly licensed vaccine (MCV4) against meningitis. The new recommendation is designed to help achieve vaccination among those at highest risk for meningococcal disease. As the vaccine supply increases, the agency said it hopes within three years to recommend routine vaccination for all adolescents beginning at age 11.
