AMA "Citizens Petition" Sent to HCFA

The American Medical Association (AMA) submitted it's "Citizens' Petition"
to the Health Care Financing Administration(HCFA) on June 27. Signed by
49 medical specialty organization, the petition charges that HCFA "has
failed to uphold the intent of Congress and its duty to taxpayers and
Medicare beneficiaries by encouraging advanced practice registered nurses
(APRNs) to practice beyond legally authorized safeguards". The petition
is the latest strategy in an ongoing campaign by organized medicine to
pressure HCFA to take action related to the Medicare rules for nurse practitioners
(NPs) and clinical nurse specialists (CNSs) reimbursement and scope of
practice when they are providing Part B Medicare services. More...
Wisconsin Nurse to be New VA Chief

Catherine Rick, MSN, RN, CNAA, was recently named the top nurse executive
for the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). Rick is a member of the Wisconsin
Nurses Association, and her new title will be chief consultant for VA's
Nursing Strategic Health Care Group. In her new role, she will provide
leadership and guidance to VA's 55,000 nursing personnel, who care for
3.6 million veterans each year.

Massachusetts Governor Signs Patients' Bill of Rights

(Canton, Mass.) -- The Massachusetts Nurses Association (MNA) applauded
the signing of "Patients' Bill of Rights" legislation by Gov. Paul Cellucci
granting Massachusetts residents who are covered by managed care plans

ANA President Writes U.S. News & World Report

In response to an article on reducing medical errors printed in the July
17 edition of U.S. News & World Report, ANA President Mary Foley, MS, RN, submitted
a letter to the editor emphasizing the role nurses play in the reduction
of medical errors. The letter highlights the importance of having adequate
nurse staffing and the importance of establishing an environment where
health care workers feel free to report errors without fear of retribution.
Foley also emphasizes ANA's support of the recommendations made by the
Institute of Medicine report regarding medical errors. ANA encourages
nurses across the country to write similar letters sharing their views
of medical error reduction. Letter
St. Vincent’s RNs Elect New York State Nurses Association
7/24/00
The 500 Registered Nurses of St. Vincent’’s Medical Center of Richmond
have elected the New York State Nurses Association (NYSNA) their collective
bargaining representative.
St. Vincent’’s is NYSNA’’s fifth major election win in the past 18 months.
RNs at St. John‘s Riverside in Yonkers, St. Cabrini Nursing Home in Dobbs
Ferry, Doctors’ Hospital in Staten Island, and Sound Shore Medical Center
in New Rochelle have also voted to join NYSNA
