Education in End-of-Life Care for Nursing Continuing Educators

8/31/01
The aging of America and the emphasis on quality of life have changed the way Americans look at death and dying. Health care professionals require specialized education to provide compassionate and skilled care to dying patients. The End-of-Life Nursing Education Consortium (ELNEC) is a nationally recognized initiative to teach nurse educators about end-of-life care so they can share this vital specialty information with nursing students and practicing nurses. The project is funded by a major grant from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, and is led by the American Association of Colleges of Nursing and City of Hope National Medical Center.

The November 15-17, 2001 course in Pasadena, California is designed specifically for nurse educators who have limited end-of-life care experience and who work in nursing continuing education settings to improve care provided by practicing nurses. The course includes not only specific end-of-life care content, but also exceptional teaching/learning resources and strategies that can be immediately utilized in nursing continuing education activities. Registration, materials, and continental breakfasts and lunches during the course are funded by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation grant that supports the project. In addition, each nurse educator who completes the course will receive a $100 stipend to partially offset travel and lodging costs.

Space for the course is limited, and an application process is required. More information about the ELNEC project, all the courses, and the application process is available on the Web site: www.aacn.nche.edu/elnec.

Physicians Urged to Recommend Pap Tests to Women Ages 65 and Older

8/29/01
Consumer research suggests that older women rely on their physicians to communicate with them about the need for cervical cancer screening. The National Cancer Institute (NCI) and the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) have collaborated to create new and updated educational materials to assist physicians in communicating with patients about cervical cancer and Pap tests.

The publication of the new materials coincides with expanded Medicare coverage. As of July 1, 2001, Medicare covers cervical cancer screening every two years for women not at high risk for uterine or vaginal cancers, while continuing to cover annual tests for women at high risk. This coverage change, combined with a continued effort by physicians and other health professionals to encourage Pap tests among older women, may increase the rate of cervical cancer screening.

NCI urges physicians and other health professionals to encourage older women to get Pap tests and to inform them that Medicare will cover the test every other year. When detected early, cervical cancer is highly treatable. Unfortunately, many older women may believe that the risk of cervical cancer and the need for Pap tests decline with age. Research suggests the importance of Pap tests among older women is often minimized, particularly for post-hysterectomy and sexually inactive patients.

To order a free sample packet of the new and updated cervical cancer materials, reflecting the latest statistics and the change in Medicare coverage, call the NCI's Cancer Information Service at 1-800-4-CANCER (1-800-422-6237) or visit NCI's Publications Locator Web site at http://cancer.gov/publications.

2001 House of Delegates Actions

8/13/01
The 2001 House of Delegates met from June 29 through July 1, 2001 and passed the first revision to the Code for Nurses (renamed the Code of Ethics for Nurses) since 1985. Delegates supported ANA’s Call to the Profession for September, 2001, where nurses across the disciplines will gather to address nursing and staffing shortages. In other important actions, the house laid the groundwork for major initiatives which will be undertaken in the coming year, to reshape the association and better position it to respond to the challenges facing the profession in the twenty-first century, including future organizational structure, changes in bylaws, and the first dues increase in more than 10 years. Important action was also taken to support nurses working in prisons and other criminal justice environments, to recognize the nurse’s role in end of life care, to the commitment to oppose discrimination experienced by nurses based upon sexual orientation in the military. The house also advocated the reduction of unnecessary and duplicative paperwork; supported increased funding for AIDS/HIV research and care; and called for the immediate cessation of bombing on Vieques, Puerto Rico.

In a July 24, 2001 letter to USEPA, the AHA formally confirmed its "commitment to the goal of our original partnership as described in the 1998 Memorandum of Understanding between AHA and EPA. That goal is to enhance efforts within the healthcare industry to minimize the production of persistent, bioaccumulative and toxic (PBT) pollutants and to reduce the volume of waste generated. In addition, we remain committed to the numerical goals established at that time:

End to Mercury Thermometers Urged

8/3/01
A technical report from the American Academy of Pediatrics July, 2001 issue of the peer-reviewed scientific journal, Pediatrics, describes routes of exposure and hazards of mercury, and the measures pediatricians can take to reduce children's exposure. One of the chief conclusions is that pediatricians should stop using all mercury-containing devices, including thermometers, and encourage parents to do the same. In addition parents can reduce children's exposure to mercury by limiting consumption of fish with high mercury content eaten by children, and by women during pregnancy and lactation.
