Support Inouye Amendment to Increase Rank of Chief Nurse8/23/02Senator Daniel Inouye (D-HI) recently introduced an amendment to the 2003 Fiscal Year Defense Authorization (S. 2154) that would increase the grade for the Chief Nurses of the Army, Navy and Air Force to that of two stars. Currently, the existing law limits the position of Chief of Nurse of the three branches to that of brigadier general in the Army and Air Force, and rear admiral, lower half in the Navy. Limiting the chief nurse position to one-star does not sufficiently recognize the scope and responsibilities and the value of the nursing perspective on the wide range of patient care issues. The ANA supports the amendment to the Defense Authorization Bill which is headed to a House-Senate Conference Committee. ANA urges you to contact the Senate (www.senate.gov) and House (www.house.gov/hasc/billsandreports/107thcongress/hr_4546conferees.html) conferees and urge them to support the Inouye Amendment when it is voted on in the Conference Committee.
