Medication Errors Observed in 36 Health Care Facilities

9/11/02
Researchers producing a study of 36 hospitals and skilled nursing facilities in Georgia and Colorado say their findings show medication errors occur more than 40 times per day in a typical 300-bed hospital, although only about 7% of the errors were judged potential adverse drug events. The study which appears in the Archives of Internal Medicine (Vol. 162 No. 16, September 9, 2002) found that 19%, or nearly one in five medication doses, were in error. The most frequent errors by category were wrong time, omission, wrong dose, and unauthorized drug. The study notes that defects in medication administration systems are widespread, and the study's authors concluded that the typical patient was subject to about 2 errors every day.

September/October Health Affairs Features Articles, New Studies On Workforce Issues

9/10/02
The September/October issue of Health Affairs examines healthcare workforce issues and includes several articles focusing on the nursing workforce.
  • In "Strengthening Hospital Nursing," Peter Buerhaus, et al., make the argument that preventing shortages of RNs will require major recruitment efforts as well as improvements in the hospital workplace.
  • University of Washington nursing professors, Bobbie Berkowitz and Deborah Ward, discuss ways to bridge the gap between nursing schools and hospitals in "Arching the Flood: How to Bridge the Gap Between Nursing Schools and Hospitals."
  • In "Nursing Shortage Redux: Turning the Corner on an Enduring Problem," University of Pennsylvania nursing professor Julie Sochalski argues that enhanced career ladders, better wages, flexible hours, and a more satisfying workplace would aid in retaining RNs.

September 2002 AJN Remembers 9/11

9/03/02
A year after the terrorist attacks of September 11, the September 2002 American Journal of Nursing includes several articles remembering that day and exploring its aftermath. The journal honors the 11 nurses who were killed that day, including Kathy Mazza, commanding officer of the Port Authority Police Training Academy, who saved an unknown number of people trapped in the North Tower of the World Trade Center by shooting out lobby windows to create an escape route. In another article, nurses share their reflections on life since 9/11, including what has changed and what still needs to change in the public health system. Also, a nurse involved in administering the smallpox vaccine to those researching the disease writes about the potential complications of the vaccine.

And don't miss ANA's columns: "Health and Safety" on protecting patients and staff from pesticides; "Issues Update" on how the ANA and some states are using workplace advocacy strategies to empower nurses; and "Washington Watch" on ANA's new Web page to link nurses to members of Congress and help them stay informed on pressing legislative issues.
