The New York State Nurses Association (NYSNA) applauded efforts by U.S. Senator Charles Schumer to obtain $50 million for nurse scholarships through the federal Nurse Reinvestment Act.
According to a survey conducted last year by the New York State Education Department (SED), New York will have a shortfall of as many as 30,000 Registered Nurses by the year 2007.
"Nurses strongly support efforts to promote recruitment of nurses through scholarships, loans, and grant programs," said Lola Fehr, RN, NYSNA executive director.

"ANA Needlestick Safety and Prevention Independent Study Module" by Mary Foley, MS RN and Annemarie T. Leyden, EdD, RN is now on ANA's CE website.
Every day, health care workers are exposed to dangerous and deadly bloodborne pathogens through contaminated needlesticks, sharps or splash exposures. It is one of the greatest risks faced by the frontline health care worker. Yet, these exposures have often been considered "part of the job". "The Needlestick Safety and Prevention Act" was signed into law in November 2000 and became effective in April 2001. The purposes of the "ANA Needlestick Safety and Prevention Independent Study Module", which was funded by an OSHA Susan Harwood Training Grant, are to inform nurses about the law, the additional protections it provides and present other strategies the nurse can use to reduce occupational exposure to bloodborne pathogens.
FREE only for a short time. Go to Online CE catalog.

The October 9, 2003, episode of NBC/Warner Brothers' "ER," which focused on nurses, has elicited a broad range of responses from nurses -- both positive and negative. Specifically, the show featured "a bad day for nurse Abby Lockhart." In addition, a nurse walkout was depicted, in which six nurses were summarily fired and a number of other nurses were given 90-day suspensions.
Given the range of reactions to the episode, ANA encourages you to share your feedback with AOL Time Warner, Warner Brothers, NBC and the producers of the show (by clicking on the e-mail links below). In addition, please blind copy cprice@ana.org when you send your comments. We will be posting a sampling of comments on NursingWorld. Thank you.

A recently published study "Coalitions and Interest Group Influence over Health Policy," presented at the Annual meeting of the American Political Science Association has identified ANA among the top twenty five groups with influence in health policy.
The purpose of the study was not just to discover which groups' reputation for influence is the strongest, but also to discover why. Results showed that interest groups boost their reputations though reliable lobbying, grassroots organization, and strategic coalition building. Size of the group and financial resources make a significant difference, but smart organizing and coalition building are significant counter weights.
ANA, finished strongly in the study, rating seventeenth out of the 171 groups studied in the survey.

Life expectancy in the United States reached an all time high in 2001 according to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services' (HHS) annual report on the nation's health. The report also finds evidence that the diabetes epidemic is getting worse; between 1997 and 2002, the percent of Americans diagnosed with diabetes increased by 27 percent.
In a special section on diabetes, the report notes that 6.5 percent of American adults were diagnosed with diabetes in 2002 compared to 5.1 percent in 1997. Another recent study shows that about 12 million adults have been diagnosed with diabetes and an additional 5 million adults have the condition but don't know it.
Health United States, 2003 is a comprehensive report with the latest statistics from federal health agencies, the U.S. Census Bureau, population surveys and other data. The report was prepared by the National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS) in HHS' Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The report is available online at www.cdc.gov/nchs as an electronic edition and updated periodically with new data.
