Free Webcast -- Dementia Focus: The Person Behind the Disease
10/20/05
"Getting to Know You" takes on a whole new significance when working with challenging behaviors in cognitively impaired older adults. Focusing on the person, and attempting to assess the environment through their perspective, will help providers to better understand the impetus for behaviors and to minimize future recurrences – a factor which can make the difference between living with family or in assisted-living, and living in a long-term care environment.

This webcast provides viewers with a broad range of tools and strategies to improve assessment and understanding of cognitively impaired older adults, and also outlines a range of interventions to change provider behaviors and modify the environment in order to provide a safe and comforting environment for those who are cognitively impaired. Call Congress Now! Tell Them Not to Cut Medicaid - Deadline Extended until October 20th
10/19/05
ANA urges Congress to halt their plans to cut Medicaid funding. ANA is aware that the tens of thousands of Americans displaced by hurricane Katrina will require ongoing medical and mental services. Now is not the time to cut Medicaid.

Despite the devastation caused by hurricanes Katrina and Rita, Congressional leaders indicate that they are planning to go ahead with a budget plan that will cut funding for Medicaid by at least $10 billion over five years. These devastating cuts will harm the poor, disabled, and elderly. They will increase the number of Americans without health insurance. They will contribute to emergency department overcrowding, delayed diagnosis of life-threatening diseases, increased reliance on charity care, and increased expenditures for preventable health complications.

ANA finds it unconscionable that Congress would consider proceeding with Medicaid cuts at a time when the human needs of our fellow Americans is so great.

Help us oppose these cuts. Call your members of Congress through, Thursday October 20th. Urge them to vote against any budget package that harms Medicaid beneficiaries. Call Congress toll-free: 1-800-426-8073

More information, including background on Medicaid and talking points can be found at www.anapoliticalpower.org.

Webcast -- Incontinence: Breaking Through the Myths
10/03/05
Would you believe that it is possible to maintain urinary continence among residents with end-stage dementia?

Most practitioners have mistaken ideas about the inevitability of urinary incontinence as we age. That notion extends to the general public and is reinforced by advertisements for incontinence pads. However, research shows that urinary incontinence is treatable, often without pharmacologic intervention, especially if assessments are routinely made by registered nurses and behavioral interventions implemented.

This program from New Look at the Old series outlines the myths and the science related to urinary incontinence, and steps you can take to assess, improve and maintain continence among your client population. The 60 minute program features interviews with Dr. Specht, nurses working in long-term care settings, a physical therapist, and a resident with urinary incontinence.

To access the webcast, go to www.NursingCenter.com/AJNolderadults.
