Several articles in the November 2001 issue of the American Journal of Nursing (AJN) explore issues related to the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks and subsequent events. This month's "Policy Perspective" is a point-counterpoint on the use of national resources to prevent bioterrorism, while in "Viewpoint," a Muslim nurse relates her experiences with discrimination by other nurses for wearing the hijab.
With victims of the attacks primarily hospitalized due to burns, many nurses working with these patients will need to help them deal with both the physical aspects and the ongoing psychological issues, including depression, post-traumatic stress disorder and anxiety. Two articles in this month's AJN focus on emergency care of the patient with burns, and a third looks at the psychological aspects.
The November AJN also includes an article on terminal dypsnea, or air hunger. A photo essay on the role of the Army Nurse Corps during the Korean War recognizes the 50th anniversary of that war and illustrates the importance of nurses during wartime.
Also, don't miss ANA's columns: "Washington Watch" updates you on new mandatory overtime legislation, introduced Nov. 6; "Issues Update" discusses ANA's Bill of Rights for Registered Nurses; and "Workplace Rights" navigates what to expect when reporting a colleague to the Board of Nursing.
