According to a new report by the Institute of Medicine (IOM), to reduce deaths and injuries caused by medical errors, health care organizations must adopt information technology systems capable of collecting and sharing health information on patients and their care.
While some hospitals, medical groups, and other health care organizations have installed computer systems to manage patient information, a national infrastructure for standardized data collection and exchange is needed because patients often receive services from many different providers.

Eighteen Washington State hospitals are being notified that Western Professional Insurance Company, a subsidiary of Physicians Insurance, will no longer provide medical liability insurance to hospitals in Washington State. The hospitals--in both rural and urban areas--will have up to six months to find coverage with another insurer.
The absence of medical liability reform is placing increasing pressures on hospitals and physicians, as well as on the companies trying to provide adequate, affordable liability insurance. Although the number of claims has not increased, the amount paid per claim has dramatically increased as a result of shockingly high jury awards, which drive payments.
Western Professional Insurance Company's loss ratios for the past five years averaged 134%, and they could not increase premiums fast enough to keep up with costs. The company will continue to insure about 6,000 Washington State physicians.
