ANA President's Holiday Message

12/21/01

The holiday season always makes me nostalgic about the past. Over the years, I've accumulated so many treasured memories with family, friends, co-workers and even with my patients and their families. And, as always, the holidays make me think about the future -- for better or worse, the notion of making a New Year's resolution, or at least thinking about one, is ingrained.

This year, I didn't have to do too much soul-searching to come up with my goal for the New Year. Like nurses and Americans across the country, I was deeply affected by the events of September 11. I was so touched, but not in the least bit surprised, by the outpouring of support from nurses nationwide. Staff nurses at hospitals near disaster sites and nurse volunteers worked tirelessly and stood ready to provide care to survivors and their families. Nurses donated their time, their blood and their money. They worked the nursing network to see what needs were going unmet and how they could meet them. And nurses are still making valuable contributions to this day.

Many of my colleagues who pitched in during those tragic days told me that, despite their sorrow, they realized what a gift it is to be a nurse and to have the skills they have. So my New Year's resolution is this: To work with ANA, our constituent member associations and other nursing organizations to ensure that nurses' gifts are appreciated every time they step through the doors at work -- no matter where they practice or what role they fill.

A lofty resolution? Yes. But ANA and nurses nationwide have already made great strides to improve nurses' working environment and the profession. We are lucky to have each other. And by continuing to work together, we can make a difference in 2002!

Happy Holidays!

More Than One Million New Nurses Needed by 2010

12/12/01
More than one million new nurses will be needed by the year 2010, according to the latest projections from the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The report, published in the November 2001 Monthly Labor Review, projects that total employment will increase by 22.2 million jobs during the 2000-2010 period, rising to 167.8 million.

Health care practitioners and technical occupations are expected to account for 1.6 million new jobs during that period. Registered nurses, which represent the largest occupation in this group, should account for more than a third of those new jobs. This growth, coupled with current trends of nurses retiring or leaving the profession and less new nurses coming into it, could lead to a shortage of more than one million nurses by the end of this decade.

The report notes that all projections were completed prior to the events of Sept. 11 and that as the economic consequences of those and subsequent events become clearer, the BLS will incorporate these effects in future releases of its occupational outlook. The current occupational projections can be found in the 2002-2003 Occupational Outlook Handbook, accessible at www.bls.gov/emp.

AMA Urges FDA to Address Potential Risks of PVC Medical Devices Containing DEHP

12/11/01
The American Medical Association (AMA) has urged the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to expedite its evaluation of ways to address the potential risks that may be associated with the use of DEHP-containing medical devices used in certain procedures.

The AMA resolution, passed by the House of Delegates on Dec. 5, is in response to a recent FDA safety assessment that found that some medical products made from polyvinyl chloride (PVC) may expose patients to unsafe amounts of the toxic chemical DEHP.

Nurses Rank No. 2 in Gallup "Honesty and Ethics" Poll

12/10/01
Nurses Rank No. 2 in Gallup "Honesty and Ethics" Poll The nation's nurses rank second for their honesty and integrity, with 84 percent of Americans rating them "high" or "very high," according to a CNN/USA Today/Gallup Poll. Firefighters, who were given high ratings by 90 percent of Americans, displaced nurses from the poll's top slot this year, following the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks. Also moving up in rank were members of the military, who came in at number three, with 81 percent of Americans giving them high marks. And police, pharmacists, medical doctors and the clergy followed, with more than two-thirds of Americans giving each group a thumbs up. Nurses had previously rated first for two years in a row, after being added to the list in 1999.

The poll was conducted on November 26-27. Go to http://www.gallup.com/poll/releases/pr011205.asp to read full report.

'Low-Tar' Cigarettes Are Not Healthier; Major Initiative to Educate Public Launched

12/03/01
The National Cancer Institute (NCI) has issued a report which concludes that "low-tar" cigarettes are just as harmful as regular brands, in part because smokers tend to take bigger, more frequent puffs of the light cigarettes in order to inhale more nicotine. As a result of the report's findings, so far 22 public health groups across the nation, including ANA, have launched a major public health initiative aimed at making this deception "an urgent public health issue."

For details, see www.tobaccofreekids.org. For getting help on quitting smoking, see www.cancer.org or www.lungusa.org.
