11/18/05
While the waters have receded, the devastation of the health care system in New Orleans remains. Hospitals and health systems are experiencing extreme staffing shortages because of the loss of many health care professionals. Ochsner Clinic Foundation is an academic medical center and is a recipient of the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Magnet Recognition award. Ochsner Clinic Foundation has 90 registered nurse openings, but they also are in need of LPNs and certified nursing assistants. Particular nursing shortages exist in medical/surgical nursing, telemetry and adult critical care.

Call Congress Now! Tell Them Not to Cut Medicaid - Vote Expected At The End of This Week!
11/17/05
ANA urges Congress to halt their plans to cut Medicaid funding. ANA is aware that Medicaid provides essential health care coverage for an estimated 51 million Americans.

Despite the devastation caused by hurricanes Katrina and Rita, Congressional leaders indicate that they are planning to go ahead with a budget plan that will cut funding for Medicaid by at least $10 billion over five years. These devastating cuts will harm the poor, disabled, and elderly. They will increase the number of Americans without health insurance. They will contribute to emergency department overcrowding, delayed diagnosis of life-threatening diseases, increased reliance on charity care, and increased expenditures for preventable health complications.

ANA finds it unconscionable that Congress would consider proceeding with Medicaid cuts at a time when the human needs of our fellow Americans is so great.

Help us oppose these cuts. Call your members of Congress through, Saturday November 19th. Urge them to vote against any budget package that harms Medicaid beneficiaries. Call Congress toll-free TODAY: 1-800-828-0498.

More information, including background on Medicaid and talking points can be found at www.anapoliticalpower.org.

Learn About the New Medicare Prescription Drug Benefit and Earn CNE Credit
11/03/05
Are patients and family members asking you about the new Medicare prescription drug benefit? Want some answers that you can use in your practice? Interested in learning about the program and getting CNE credits for it?

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services has a series of tools created just for nurses and other health care professionals describing the new benefit at www.cms.hhs.gov/medlearn/drugcoverage.asp. One of the first things on the site is a continuing education module that offers CNE credit through the University of Kansas for a modest fee. There are power point presentations that can be used for training others about the benefit and posters, brochures, and handy tear sheets that direct patients to the local experts who can help them select a plan.

The simple thing to tell patients is to go to www.medicare.gov to use the plan finder to enroll. Or if they want go to 1-800-MEDICARE. Finally, go to www.eldercare.gov to find the list of experts in your community who can help your patients enroll.

ANA Questionnaire on "Near Misses"
11/03/05
The American Nurses Association (ANA) continues to work as a strategic partner with the Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI) in the Saving 100,000 Lives Campaign, which is educating nurses and others on ways to enhance patient safety in the hospital setting. In adding a component on "Near Misses" to ANA's Effecting Positive Change in Patient Safety/Advocacy initiative, ANA is working to quantify nurses' interventions in preventing errors by capturing information about their knowledge regarding near misses.

The "Near Misses" questionnaire, which can be submitted anonymously, may be found at www.nursingworld.org/patientsafety/misses.htm. Comments are typed directly by respondents into the form. Responses are then forwarded electronically to ANA staff. There is no automatic e-mail address included for the respondent. All e-mails processed through the web site are forwarded without identification to ANA staff members. Respondents that do choose to include their names should be cautioned that ANA cannot guarantee continuing anonymity if records are subpoenaed. Over time, nurses' confidential responses will be synthesized, aggregated and posted on a Nurses Share Their Stories section on NursingWorld.org.
