Journal Focus
The Online Journal of Issues in Nursing (OJIN) presents a variety of perspectives on cutting edge topics, giving readers a chance to see the full complexity of the topic. The journal recognizes that individuals have differing views on these topics, and on the issues inherent in these topics, and provides a forum in which readers can both express their views and understand others' views on the topic.
Call for Manuscripts
Authors are encouraged to submit manuscripts, related to any previously posted OJIN topic, that present research, thinking, and/or experiences furthering the discussion of the topic. The list of OJIN topics can be accessed on this site. Manuscripts can be submitted indefinitely after the first article on the topic has been posted, even if the topic was initially introduced many years previously. OJIN's online technology enables us to place newly accepted manuscripts, that are related to previously posted topics, immediately following the other articles for that topic, thus grouping like articles together, and showing how nursing's collective thinking may be changing over time.
Additionally, authors are encouraged to contact the editor ojin@kent.edu as soon as an upcoming topic is listed under "What's New" to begin discussing manuscripts they would like to submit for the upcoming topic.
Queries to the Editor are invited to allow the editor to offer advice to the author. However, queries are not required before manuscript submission. For manuscript queries contact Harriet Coeling, Editor at ojin@kent.edu.
Manuscript Preparation
Manuscripts are submitted for the exclusive use of the Online Journal of Issues in Nursing. All submitted articles must be original, not having been published before, and not under consideration for publication elsewhere.
Title Page
Each manuscript should be prefaced with a title page including the title, author(s) name, affiliation, and e-mail address if one is available. Place an asterisk before the author with whom the editor should correspond (preferably one with an e-mail address). Include also this individual's mailing address, telephone number where messages may be left, and fax number.
Biosketch of Authors
Include a one-paragraph biosketch for each author that includes educational degrees, certifications, and a description of how past experiences and/or one's current position have prepared the author to write this manuscript.
Abstract
Include a concise, 100 to 150 word abstract that identifies the issue(s) addressed and describes the general content of the article.
Key Words
Identify 10 - 20 key words and phrases that can be used to index the article, listing the key words in order of importance for indexing. Include key words that may be used by lay persons.
Text of article
The length of most articles is between 15 and 20 pages typed and double spaced. The latest edition of the APA Manual should be followed. All articles will be edited as necessary for content, style, clarity, grammar, and spelling. National spellings from all nations are recognized as authentic and will be accepted.
Protection of Human Subjects
Manuscripts containing reports of research conducted with animals or humans as participants must contain a statement that the project was approved (or judged exempt) by an institutional review board. Authors should cite methods employed for protection of participants, including informed consent and assurances of confidentiality or anonymity.
References
Include reference page(s) at the end of the document using the latest APA style format. When electronic references are used, follow APA guidelines for citing information from the Internet and the World Wide Web: www.apastyle.org/elecref.html.
When the article is published, pointers to the URL will be used. References to online materials are encouraged.
Formatting
Keep specialized formatting codes to a minimum. Use left justification only
and avoid changing margins, fonts, and tabs within the manuscript unless
there is a compelling reason to do so.
Artwork and Figures
Authors are requested to submit all artwork, images, and figures that accompany the article in web-ready format, either JPEG or GIF.
Permissions
The author(s) are responsible for obtaining permission to use any copyrighted material. When specific persons are mentioned in the article (beyond cited references), or institutions named, permission from the individual or in the case of an institution, the administrator, must be obtained in writing before publication. If special stipulations are mentioned by either the individual or administrator, they must be followed.
