Dear Editor:
Couldn't agree with you more. I wonder how long it would take the public to get up in arms
if they knew that no nurse is on the premises of most nursing homes with the exception of the
lone director of nursing. I was aghast when I surveyed four nursing homes in West Texas and
asked about staffing patterns and other issues.
It is not clear who is seeing these people with multiple medical problems and who is trying
to recognize the problems early. Perhaps the idea is to let the elderly die sooner. I am upset
because nurses are disappearing also in hospitals. As predicted, we are seeing nurses only in the
critical care areas. I'm upset enough that I plan to write more letters more often to legislators.
