Response by Greer Glazer to Cady Salisbury's Letter Regarding "The Policy and Politics of Continued Competence"
by Greer Glazer (November 8, 1999)

Greer Glazer's Reply:

I am glad that my article struck a chord with you. This is a significant area and one fraught with politics!!!! I am a strong believer in mandatory continuing education (CE) having the specific CE content based on the clinical area in which one is working, rather than allowing a nurse free reign to pick any offering of interest, a practice which often allows the nurse to select the quickest and least expensive CE offering, rather than the most appropriate offering. I also would structure clinical ladders based on certification, CE, and coursework. Workplaces need to institute periodic knowledge and practice tests to assess competence. Most importantly of all, schools of nursing need to instill in RNs the importance of lifelong learning and personal responsibility for continued competence. I hope that you continue to read the Online Journal of Issues in Nursing.
