Dear Christy, Barbara, and Jacalyn,

Thank you for suggesting a long term strategy that not only benefits individuals, but might lessen the need for hospitalizations and thus the need for nurses. The age-old debate of what our current

reimbursement system funds is central to this suggestion, and nurses can be activists in encouraging payers to cover health promotion and disease prevention interventions. Additionally, and perhaps most importantly, nurses can be role models by being practitioners of healthy behaviors personally and teaching their patients, even in the acute care setting, skills in promoting health and preventing disease.
