Merle Hazard's Response to
CLUELESS IN THE LAND OF MANAGED CARE
by Anonymous Physician (January 6, 1997)

Dear Editor:

I am an RN who has practiced in the health insurance and HMO arena for about six years. The scenario cited by the physician in "Clueless in the Land of Managed Care" is very familiar to me. His conclusions that the benefits do not outweigh the hassles to practice in the managed care environment seem valid from my perspective. In my experience, the RNs in Utilization Management suffer daily doses of burnout trying to make sense out of nonsensical processes as well as trying to educate both physicians and clients on the products. Surely, there is a better way to control medical costs that would assure that we all win.

Merle Hazard, BS, RN
