American Nurses Association Sells Publishing Subsidiary

AJN company is purchased by leading nursing publisher, Lippincott-Raven Publishers

WASHINGTON, D.C. --The American Nurses Association (ANA) announced today the sale of the American Journal of Nursing Company to Lippincott-Raven Publishers, a world renowned health and medical publisher, under an agreement that will provide, as a benefit of membership, a subscription to the American Journal of Nursing to each of ANA's state nurses association members beginning with the October 1996 issue.

In announcing the sale, ANA President Beverly L. Malone, PhD, RN, FAAN, described the synergy between ANA and Lippincott-Raven Publishers. "For 100 years, the mutual efforts in nursing by ANA and Lippincott have provided registered nurses throughout the country with the information and services they need to flourish," said Malone. "We are very excited about this new partnership because it is a win-win agreement for all parties, especially the nurses of America, who can look to the American Journal of Nursing as their primary source for information and professional development."

According to ANA Executive Director Geri Marullo, MSN, RN, the agreement represents important immediate and long-term benefits for members of ANA's state associations. "As ANA embarks on its second century of service to the nursing profession, it is committed to finding new and innovative ways to do business and to increase the value of ANA/SNA membership," stated Marullo.

"Under the terms of the sale of the AJN Company to Lippincott-Raven Publishers, some of the many historical ties and benefits between ANA and the American Journal of Nursing will be enhanced and recruitment and outreach opportunities for ANA will increase substantially," Marullo added.

Currently, the journal has a circulation of approximately 250,000. Under the new agreement, this circulation will grow to approximately 370,000, and each state nurses association (SNA) member will receive the American Journal of Nursing as a benefit of his/her SNA membership during the course of the sales agreement.

In addition, the American Journal of Nursing will be identified as the official journal of ANA throughout the publication and ANA will be represented on the publication's editorial board. ANA will also contribute editorial columns, such as Washington Watch and Issues Update, in each issue. Furthermore, Lippincott-Raven Publishers and ANA are discussing joint sponsorship and development of an on-line website, geared to become the primary source of professional information for nurses and the nursing profession.

In its purchase of the AJN Company, Lippincott-Raven Publishers assumes responsibility for all AJN Company products, including two bi-monthly journals: The American Journal of Maternal/Child Nursing (MCN) and Nursing Research, as well as the company's Educational Services Division, which distributes an extensive array of multi-media products. "Lippincott-Raven Publishers will provide the resources, publishing expertise, and depth of commitment to nursing to enhance the American Journal of Nursing's influential position in nursing," confirmed Malone.

Just as ANA is a key link to the future of nursing, for over 100 years, the name Lippincott has become synonymous with nursing education. In fact, the first nursing textbook, A Hand Book of Nursing, was published by Lippincott in 1878, and in 1900, Lippincott helped to establish the American Journal of Nursing Company.

Lippincott-Raven Publishers, headquartered in Philadelphia, has over 1,500 active titles in a variety of formats, including textbooks, journals, newsletters, videos, audio cassettes, CD-Rom, and on-line. Committed to providing quality information to practicing nurses and students, Lippincott-Raven Publishers issues more than 110 journals, including: Nurse Educator, Journal of Obstetric, Gynecologic and Neonatal Nursing (JOGNN), Journal of Nursing Staff Development (JNSD), Journal of Nursing Administration (JONA), and Home Healthcare Nurse.

Lippincott-Raven Publishers is a subsidiary of Wolters Kluwer nv, a multi-domestic publishing company active in 16 European Countries, North America, Australia, New Zealand, and Asia.
