Beverly Malone Elected ANA President
ANA Delegates elected officers, board members and other leaders
WASHINGTON, DC -- Delegates of the American Nurses Association (ANA)
elected Beverly Malone, PhD, RN, FAAN of Greensboro, North Carolina, to serve as
president of the largest organization of registered nurses in the United States. Malone and
21 other leaders were elected during the ANA House of Delegates meeting held in
conjunction with its Convention and Centennial Celebration, June 14-19 in Washington,
DC.
Malone, 47, is dean and professor of the School of Nursing at North Carolina
Agricultural and Technical State University, Greensboro. Malone previously served on
the ANA Board of Directors for six years, as a director for four years, and as second
vice-president for two. She has been a member of the ANA Committee on Committees,
Finance Committee and chair of the Legislation Committee. As chair of the ANA Ad Hoc
Committee on Credentialing, Malone worked on advanced practice nursing issues with a
variety of specialty groups. At the state level, she has served as vice-president of the Ohio
Nurses Association. Currently, she is serving as vice-president of the board of trustees for
the American Nurses Foundation and vice-chair of the ANA Ethnic-Minority Fellowship
Program.
In North Carolina, Malone has served on the Governor's Task Force on the Nursing
Shortage; commissioner of the North Carolina Commission on Health Services; vice-chair of the
Board of Trustees, Moses Cone Health System; board of directors, the
Adolescent Pregnancy Prevention Program; and president of the North Carolina Council
of Baccalaureate Deans and Directors.
In her clinical career, Malone has worked as a surgical staff nurse, clinical nurse
specialist, director of nursing, and assistant administrator of nursing. Her other
accomplishments include: establishment of a fee-for-service consultation department
within a hospital setting at the University of Cincinnati; an internship with Senator Daniel
Inouye (D-HI); and a fellowship from the National Institute of Mental Health and the
ANA Minority Fellowship Program. A licensed clinical psychologist, she maintains a
small individual, group, and family therapy practice.
Malone received her BS in Nursing from the University of Cincinnati in Ohio; MS
in Adult Psychiatric Nursing from Rutgers, the State University in New Brunswick, New
Jersey; and her PhD in Clinical Psychology from the University of Cincinnati.
Other ANA officers elected to serve two-year terms include: Mary Foley, MSN, RN,
of California, ANA's most recent second vice-president and staff nurse at St. Francis
Memorial Hospital in San Francisco, was elected to the position of first vice-president;
Michael Evans, PhD, RN, CNAA, FACHE of Texas, past ANA secretary and vice-president of
Nursing Services, Presbyterian Hospital of Dallas, was elected treasurer.
Other newly elected officers include: sitting board member Barbara Blakeney, MS,
RN, CS, ANP of Massachusetts, principal public health nurse, Homeless Services and
Addiction Services in Boston, who was elected second vice-president; and Patricia
Underwood, PhD, RN of Michigan, associate professor at Grand Valley State University,
who was elected secretary. Rebecca M. Patton, BSN, RN, CNOR of Ohio, director of
Patient Services, University Hospitals Health Center at Westlake, who was appointed to
the board of directors in 1994 to fill a vacated seat, was elected to a four-year term as
director at-large.
Four new members were elected to the ANA Board of Directors. Cecilia Mulvey,
PhD, RN, of New York, associate professor, Syracuse University School of Nursing, and
Patricia Murphy, PhD, RN, CS, FAAN of New Jersey, clinical nurse specialist, ethics,
Newark Beth Israel Medical Center, were both elected to the board. In addition, Sara
McCumber, RN, C of Minnesota, staff nurse at Arrowhead Juvenile Center, and Julie A.
McGee, RN of Hawaii, staff nurse at The Queens Medical Center, were elected to fill
staff nurse positions on the board.
Jan Jones-Schenk, MNA, RN, CNA of Utah, president of Summit
Communications/jjs Associates, was appointed to fill the board vacancy created by
Blakeney's successful bid for second vice-president.
Remaining on the ANA Board until 1998 are: Verlia Brown, MA, RN of New York;
Ruben Fernandez, MA, RN of New Jersey; Peggy Mussehl, MN, RN, C of Colorado; and
Thomas Stenvig, MS, MPH, RN, CNAA of South Dakota.
Ann-Lynn Denker, PhD, ARNP, president of the Florida Nurses Association, was
elected chair of ANA's Constituent Assembly.
Elected to the ANA Congress of Nursing Practice were: Christina Sieloff, PhD, RN,
CNA of Michigan; Ann Cary, PhD, MPH, RN, ACCC of Virginia; Christine Kinavey,
MS, RN, C of California; and Judith Sweeney, MSN, RN of Massachusetts. Beverly
McDermott, RN of Wyoming; Sylvia Weber, MS, RN, CS, of Rhode Island; Monica
Vollmuth, RN of Minnesota; and Teresa A.B. Lyons, MBA, BSN, RN of Alaska, were
elected to the ANA Congress on Nursing Economics.
The new members elected to the ANA Nominating Committee include: Mary
Koithan, PhD, RN of Nevada; Margaret Wheatley, MSN, RN, CNA, C of Ohio; Linda
Armstrong Lazure, PhD, RN of Nebraska; and Madeline A. Naegle, RN, PhD, FAAN of
New York.
