American Nurses Association Endorses Health Insurance Reform Act of 1995
WASHINGTON, DC -- The American Nurses Association (ANA) has endorsed the
Health Insurance Reform Act of 1995 -- calling it an important step forward in ensuring
access to health care for all Americans. The legislation, S.1028, introduced by Senator
Edward M. Kennedy (D-MA) and Senator Nancy L. Kassebaum (R-KS), and its
companion, HR 2893, which was introduced by Representative Marge Roukema (R-NJ)
in January 1996, guarantees insurance portability and limits exclusions for preexisting
conditions.
"ANA strongly supports passage of this important legislation," said ANA President
Virginia Trotter Betts, JD, MSN, RN. "These insurance reforms will benefit millions of
Americans who fear job-lock and the terrifying prospect of losing health care coverage
that comes with job loss or change brought about by corporate downsizing and other
market forces."
ANA is a strong proponent of comprehensive health care reform that ensures access
to care to all Americans. ANA believes that passage of the Health Insurance Reform Act
is a critical first step in achieving this goal and urges members of Congress to pass this
legislation.
