Linda Stierle Named Chief Operating Officer of American Nurses Association

Washington, D.C. - Linda J. Stierle, MSN, RN, CNAA, a nurse leader with more than 30 years diverse management experience in health care operations, has been named chief operating officer (COO) of the American Nurses Association (ANA). ANA is the oldest and largest professional organization for registered nurses (RNs), a federation of 53 constituent nurses organizations representing the interests of the nation's 2.6 million RNs.

Stierle, who assumed the new position on March 13, recently retired as a Brigadier General of the Air Force. Stierle began her military career in 1970 as a staff nurse in intensive care. During her career she held various clinical and management positions including chief nursing officer at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, TX, and at the 48th Tactical Fighter Wing Hospital, Royal Air Force in Lackenheath, England. In addition, she has both regional and headquarters corporate experience. From 1995 until her retirement, she was director, medical readiness and nursing services at Bolling Air Force Base, Washington, DC. In this role she was responsible for development of health care policy in support of 46,000 personnel, 80 medical treatment facilities and a $4.5B budget. She had oversight for policies affecting 19,000 nursing personnel in active and reserve components and was responsible for training, organizing and equipping all Air Force medics.

In addition, Stierle, a member of the Texas Nurses Association, was instrumental in the creation of ANA's newest constituency for nurses in the uniformed services, FedNA. This new constituency was created by bylaws changes passed in 1999 by the ANA House of Delegates.

As COO, Stierle will be responsible for all of ANA's business operations including finance and accounting, administration and information technology. In addition, she will play a key role on the senior management team whose priorities include increasing membership and non dues revenue.

"ANA is fortunate to recruit such an accomplished leader for this key position during a time of change and growth for the association," said ANA Executive Director David Hennage, PhD, MBA. "Her accomplishments are a testament to her skills and abilities and I look forward to working with her as a colleague."

Her military awards include Legion of Merit with one oak leaf cluster, Meritorious Service Medal with three oak leaf clusters, Air Force Commendation Medal, Air Force Achievement Medal and National Defense Service Medal.

Stierle earned a master's of science in nursing from the University of California, San Francisco, a bachelor's of science in nursing from Incarnate Word College, San Antonio, TX, and a diploma in nursing from Spartanburg General Hospital in Spartanburg, S.C.
