American Nurses Association Endorses Many Election Winners

Eighty-five percent of candidates endorsed by PAC board to serve in 107th Congress

Washington, DC -- The American Nurses Association (ANA) is celebrating many victories as the 2000 election results continue to be analyzed. Many advocates of health care and nursing priorities were elected to the U.S. Congress on Tuesday. Eighty-five percent of the candidates endorsed by ANA's PAC board will be serving in the 107th Congress.

These victories include the reelection of three nurses to the U.S. House of Representatives. Rep. Eddie Bernice Johnson, RN (D-TX), who was first elected to Congress in 1992, was re-elected this year. Joining her are Reps. Carolyn McCarthy (D-NY), a licensed practical nurse, who was first elected in 1996, and Lois Capps, RN (D-CA), who took office in 1998. ANA is encouraged by the strong race run by another nurse candidate, Gerrie Schipske, RN, JD, in the 38th District of California. She was successful in bringing the issue of health care to the attention of voters in her district and raising the visibility of nursing. Absentee ballots could be decisive in this race.

In addition, many key races were won in the U.S. Senate by ANA-PAC-endorsed candidates who have a strong background in promoting health care and nursing issues. They include those elected to the Senate for the first time: Hillary Rodham Clinton (D-NY), Debbie Stabenow (D-MI), Bill Nelson (D-FL) and the late Mel Carnahan (D-MO). All were endorsed early in the election cycle.

Many proponents of health care were also elected to the U.S. House. These include incumbent Rep. Dennis Moore (D-KS), the husband of ANA member Stephene Moore, and newly-elected Rick Larsen (D-WA), Betty McCollum (D-MN), Jim Matheson (D-UT) and Adam Schiff (D-CA).

ANA is looking forward to working with these newly elected members of Congress.
