ANA President Mary Foley Elected To National Patient Safety Foundation Board

Washington, DC -- American Nurses Association (ANA) President Mary Foley, MS, RN, has been elected to the board of directors of the National Patient Safety Foundation (NPSF), a nonprofit organization committed to improving patient safety in the delivery of health care.

"I am truly honored to have been selected to represent my nursing colleagues on this most prestigious board," Foley said. "Nurses, as the front-line providers of health care in this country, know better than anyone the critical issues surrounding patient safety. ANA and its members have long served as patient advocates by calling for public policies that protect consumers, enhance accountability for quality care and promote access to the full range of health care services."

As ANA president, Foley has been extremely active in the health care policy arena, writing and lecturing about health care policy, collective action in the workplace and health and safety concerns for nurses and patients. She has been a long-time advocate for patient safety, speaking both locally and nationally on this topic as well as testifying before the U.S. Senate on patient safety and medical errors. Foley has more than 20 years experience as a registered nurse, and most recently held the position of director of nursing and chief nurse executive at Saint Francis Memorial Hospital in San Francisco, CA, where she is currently on a leave of absence. Foley received her nursing diploma from New England Deaconess Hospital School of Nursing, her bachelor of science in nursing from Boston University School of Nursing in Massachusetts, and her master's of science in nursing administration and occupational health from the University of California in San Francisco.

Sponsored by the American Medical Association, the NPSF is an independent, nonprofit research and education organization dedicated to the measurable improvement of patient safety in the delivery of health care. A leader in the patient safety movement, NPSF raises awareness, builds a knowledge base, creates a forum for sharing knowledge, and promotes the implementation of practices that improve patient safety.

Prior to Foley's election, the nursing profession was represented by former ANA President Beverly L. Malone, PhD, RN, FAAN, who is currently the deputy assistant secretary at the Department of Health and Human Services.

The American Nurses Association is the only full-service professional organization representing the nation's 2.6 million Registered Nurses through its 54 constituent associations. ANA advances the nursing profession by fostering high standards of nursing practice, promoting the economic and general welfare of nurses in the workplace, projecting a positive and realistic view of nursing, and by lobbying the Congress and regulatory agencies on health care issues affecting nurses and the public.
