Former ANA President Accepts Top Post with United Kingdom's Royal College of NursingWashington, DC -- Former American Nurses Association (ANA) President Beverly Malone, PHD, RN, FAAN, has accepted the post of general secretary for the Royal College of Nursing. This position is one of the most important nursing posts in the United Kingdom. She brings with her a wealth of experience in working with national and international leaders in health care. Malone served as ANA president from 1996-2000. As president, Malone represented the nation's 2.6 million registered nurses speaking out on a myriad of nursing, health care and public policy issues. She represented U.S. nurses in the Council of National Representatives of the International Council of Nurses, and in 1998 President Clinton appointed her to be a part of the U.S. delegation to the World Health Assembly, a world health organization meeting assembled to develop solutions for health care concerns common to all nations. In January 2000, she resigned her ANA presidency to take on a federal appointment as deputy assistant secretary for health with the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. "The ANA congratulates Beverly Malone on the next stage in her career," said ANA President Mary Foley, MS, RN. "She's a true leader, dedicated to nurses around the world. We look forward to collaborating with her to strengthen the profession of nursing both in the United States and internationally." # # # The American Nurses Association is the only full-service professional organization representing the nation's nearly 2.7 million Registered Nurses through its 54 constituent associations. ANA advances the nursing profession by fostering high standards of nursing practice, promoting the economic and general welfare of nurses in the workplace, projecting a positive and realistic view of nursing, and by lobbying the Congress and regulatory agencies on health care issues affecting nurses and the public.
