ANA Applauds Bush's Budgetary Commitment to Addressing the Nursing ShortageWashington, DC -- The American Nurses Association applauds President Bush for his commitment to addressing the nursing shortage as outlined in his proposed budget submitted to Congress today. In his budget, Bush recommends focusing resources on the Health Professions' grants that address current health workforce supply challenges, such as the impending nursing shortage and improving diversity in the health professions. ANA President Mary Foley, MS, RN stated, "President Bush's commitment to funding initiatives to address this impending nurse shortage is a step in the right direction. We look forward to working with the Administration and Congress in addressing this health care crisis and also addressing critical workplace issues." ANA believes that education and recruitment initiatives along with action on workplace issues are critical to addressing the nursing shortage. # # # The American Nurses Association is the only full-service professional organization representing the nation's 2.6 million Registered Nurses through its 54 constituent associations. ANA advances the nursing profession by fostering high standards of nursing practice, promoting the economic and general welfare of nurses in the workplace, projecting a positive and realistic view of nursing, and by lobbying the Congress and regulatory agencies on health care issues affecting nurses and the public.
