Bodley Joins ANA as General Counsel

Washington, DC -- Alice L. Bodley has been named general counsel of the American Nurses Association (ANA).

As general counsel, Bodley will assess the legal interest of the ANA and its related entities – the American Nurses Foundation, the American Nurses Credentialing Center and the American Academy of Nursing – and its structural units – United American Nurses, Commission on Workplace Advocacy and Congress on Nursing Practice and Economics. She will develop legal policies, positions and practices on behalf of the association and counsel staff on all ANA legal issues. Working concurrently with ANA executives, Bodley will draft ANA position papers and briefs on all legal matters and will oversee legal issues and relationships between the association and its constituent members. In addition, she will represent the association's legal interests as a labor organization.

"We're excited about Alice joining ANA," said Chief Executive Officer Linda Stierle, MSN, RN, CNAA. "She has the legal background and the hands-on experience needed for this very important role in our organization. With more than 20 years of employment and labor law experience, she will definitely be an asset to ANA."

Bodley most recently served as the chief counsel for the Office of the Chairman of the Federal Labor Relations Authority in Washington, DC. In that role, she provided legal counsel to the chairman and supervised agency attorneys responsible for reviewing federal sector cases involving grievance arbitration, unfair labor practices and negotiations. Before that, Bodley spent six years as a partner at the Washington, DC, law firm, Beins, Bodley, Axelrod & Kraft, P.C. While at the firm, she represented unions and other clients in a broad range of employment and labor relations matters including arbitration, contract disputes and negotiations and unfair labor practice investigations. Bodley also spent several years working at the National Federation of Federal Employees where she held positions as executive director and deputy general.

Bodley holds bar memberships in the U.S. Supreme Court, the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit and several other circuit courts. Bodley received her juris doctorate from Villanova University School of Law and her bachelor of arts in political science from Swarthmore College, both located in Pennsylvania.

The American Nurses Association is the only full-service professional organization representing the nation's nearly 2.7 million Registered Nurses through its 54 constituent associations. ANA advances the nursing profession by fostering high standards of nursing practice, promoting the economic and general welfare of nurses in the workplace, projecting a positive and realistic view of nursing, and by lobbying the Congress and regulatory agencies on health care issues affecting nurses and the public.
