Severed Ties Silence Maine Nurses' National VoiceANA will continue efforts to improve nurses' working conditions, patient care nationwide.Washington, DC -- The American Nurses Association (ANA) announced today that it remains strong and will continue its fight for nurses' and patients' rights nationwide, despite the Maine State Nurses Association's (MSNA) decision to break its long-standing affiliation with the ANA. The vote to disaffiliate took place April 28 at the MSNA's annual business meeting in Bangor, Maine. ANA President Mary E. Foley, MS, RN, said that the vote to disaffiliate would hurt Maine nurses. "Without ANA's resources and national influence, Maine nurses are in a weaker position to win good contracts, organize more nurses and get legislation passed that can improve nurses' working conditions and keep patients safe," Foley said. While concerned about the negative impact of disaffiliation on Maine nurses, Foley voiced ANA's commitment to move nursing's national agenda forward with the continued collaboration of its constituent member organizations. "The American Nurses Association and its members are ready and able to take on the corporate-minded health care industry and put an end to short staffing, mandatory overtime and working conditions that harm nurses' health and safety," Foley said. "ANA is here to work for all nurses and will continue to be a strong and viable organization, and we will move forward to meet the challenges facing nurses across the country." # # # The American Nurses Association is the only full-service professional organization representing the nation's nearly 2.7 million Registered Nurses through its 54 constituent associations. ANA advances the nursing profession by fostering high standards of nursing practice, promoting the economic and general welfare of nurses in the workplace, projecting a positive and realistic view of nursing, and by lobbying the Congress and regulatory agencies on health care issues affecting nurses and the public.
