Schumann Joins ANA as Director of Nursing Practice and Policy

Washington, DC -- Mary Jean Schumann, MSN, RN, MBA, CPNP, has joined the American Nurses Association (ANA) as Director of Nursing Practice and Policy.

In her new role, Schumann will interpret and respond to issues related to nursing practice and policy. She will ensure that the professional nursing standards are developed, revised and promoted. Additionally, she will oversee activities for database development through the National Center for Nursing Quality (NCNQ). Schumann will manage a staff of senior policy fellows and guide them in developing activities, products, publications and other written materials related to advancing the nursing profession. She also will provide direction to the Congress on Nursing Practice and Economics (CNPE), a structural unit of the ANA that addresses practice and policy issues; creates, endorses and approves standards of practice for nursing specialties; reviews and revises the Code of Ethics as necessary; and responds to concerns related to equal opportunity and human rights, ethics, nursing education research and cultural sensitivity.

Schumann has extensive experience in leading health care organizations. Most recently, she served as the executive director of the National Organization on Adolescent Pregnancy, Parenting and Prevention in Washington, DC. She led the association to increased visibility, policy development and financial stability through strategic planning that included fundraising and increased development of partnerships. Prior to that, Schumann was the executive director of the National Certification Board of Pediatric Nurse Practitioners and Nurses where she participated in strategic planning, increased revenue by 40 percent, successfully coordinated the technological integration of certification examinations and helped to increase the visibility and credibility of the association. For five years, she served as the chief nurse executive at Tomah Memorial Hospital in Wisconsin where she managed the nursing services of the hospital, which served an area of approximately 25,000. Schumann has also served as a clinical administrator, clinical nurse specialist, a lamaze instructor, a nursing faculty member and a staff nurse. She currently maintains a clinical role as an on-call registered nurse with the Montgomery (MD) Hospice Society.

"With 28 years in nursing leadership roles, Mary has the knowledge and experience we need to lead our nursing practice division," said ANA Chief Executive Officer Linda Stierle, MSN, RN, CNAA, "She's an innovative leader and has a successful track record in health care and hospital regulatory and political issues. We are fortunate to have recruited an individual with Mary's background and proven track record of leading large health care associations."

Schumann earned her master's of business administration from the University of Minnesota. She earned her master's of science and her bachelor of science in nursing from the University of Wisconsin. Schumann also has national certification as a pediatric nurse practitioner.

The American Nurses Association is the only full-service professional organization representing the nation's 2.7 million Registered Nurses through its constituent member state nurses associations. The ANA advances the nursing profession by fostering high standards of nursing practice, promoting the economic and general welfare of nurses in the workplace, projecting a positive and realistic view of nursing, and by lobbying the Congress and regulatory agencies on health care issues affecting nurses and the public.
