Nurses to Tell Congress to Make Safe Staffing a PriorityWashington, DC -- Nurses from across the country will fan out across Capitol Hill on Tuesday, June 26 and Thursday, June 28 to meet with legislators and demand better workplace conditions for nurses in hospitals. The nurses, from the American Nurses Association (ANA) and ANA's labor arm, the United American Nurses (UAN), will bring Congress the message that national action is needed on the prohibition of mandatory overtime, safe staffing and whistleblower protection to make hospitals safe again for patients and nurses. Nurses are daily called on by their supervisors to work well beyond their shifts -- despite a nurse's objections -- and to carry out their duties with more patients than they can adequately care for. The fight to prohibit mandatory overtime is a priority for nurses seeking to create safer working conditions in hospitals. ANA and UAN nurses have gathered more than 20,000 signatures from nurses across the country, which they will present at a 2:45 p.m. statement, demanding "safe staffing now."
# # # The United American Nurses, the labor arm of the American Nurses Association, is the nation's largest union of RNs and is comprised of state nursing associations from 23 states, plus the District of Columbia and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
