ANA CHEERS SENATE PASSAGE OF PATIENTS' RIGHTS BILLWashington, DC --As nearly 800 nurses gathered in the nation's capital to address concerns regarding nursing and safe, quality patient care, the American Nurses Association (ANA) hailed yesterday's passage by the Senate of the bipartisan Patient Protection Act, S.1052, as a major step forward in the long march toward enactment of a true patients' bill of rights. "The gathering momentum - fueled by a clear public mandate for these protections - is going to carry us to victory in the House, as well," said ANA President Mary E. Foley, MS, RN. "Nurses are, first and foremost, patient advocates, and our commitment to this legislation is an extension of that professional hallmark." ANA leaders from across the nation are gathered in Washington, DC, this week for annual meetings and have used the opportunity to take their message of support for the McCain-Edwards-Kennedy measure to their senators. The bill contains an important provision for nurses that protects health care professionals from retaliation when they advocate for their patients. # # # The American Nurses Association is the only full-service professional organization representing the nation's 2.7 million Registered Nurses through its constituent member state nurses associations. The ANA advances the nursing profession by fostering high standards of nursing practice, promoting the economic and general welfare of nurses in the workplace, projecting a positive and realistic view of nursing, and by lobbying the Congress and regulatory agencies on health care issues affecting nurses and the public.
