UAN Applauds Youngstown Nurses' Contract VictoryOhio RNs Won Respect, Fair Treatment for All Nurses
Washington, DC -- Nurses nationwide from the United American Nurses (UAN), AFL-CIO, saluted the bravery and dedication of their brothers and sisters in the Youngstown General Duty Nurses Association (Ohio Nurses Association's) Forum Health/Western Reserve Care System unit, who Saturday announced they ratified a new contract including significant restrictions on mandatory overtime. The Youngstown nurses had been on strike since May 1, which at 81 days was one of the longest nurses' strikes this year. "These courageous nurses in Youngstown have taken a stand for the issues that matter to nurses across the country," said UAN President Cheryl Johnson, RN. "The hard work and dedication of YGDNA's negotiating committee and nurses made this victory a reality. We will all benefit from their willingness to send management the message that safe staffing and respect for nurses are simply not negotiable." YGNDA nurses won key contract provisions granting an end to mandatory overtime 18 months from the date of ratification. For the prior 18 months, the use of mandatory overtime will be significantly limited. "This is a victory for Youngstown nurses, and it's a victory for all nurses everywhere," said Linda Warino, RN, a member of the UAN's Executive Council and part of the YGDNA negotiating team. "We expect respect from our employer inside the hospital and at the bargaining table. We have accepted nothing less." ONA is a constituent member of the UAN." # # # The United American Nurses, AFL-CIO, the union arm of the American Nurses Association, is the nation's largest RN union with 100,000 nurses and is made up of state nurses associations or collective bargaining programs from 23 states, the District of Columbia and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
The American Nurses Association is the only full-service professional organization representing the nation's 2.7 million Registered Nurses through its constituent member state nurses
associations. ANA advances the nursing profession by fostering high standards of nursing practice, promoting the economic and general welfare of nurses in the workplace, projecting a positive and realistic view of nursing, and by lobbying the Congress and regulatory agencies on health care issues affecting nurses and the public.
