ANA and Nursingworld Mark Five-year Partnership with Online Nursing Journal

OJIN Celebrates Fifth Anniversary

Washington, DC --The American Nurses Association (ANA) and NursingWorld.org are celebrating a five-year partnership with the Online Journal of Issues of Nursing (OJIN), an online scholarly journal on health care topics.

Launched in 1996, OJIN was an early leader in worldwide web-based scholarly journals. It took advantage of the new age of electronic publishing to provide timely and thorough discussions of health-related issues, presenting multiple points of view from a range of experts. OJIN is owned by Kent State University College of Nursing, and is published on ANA's website, NursingWorld.org. The journal's partnership with ANA and NursingWorld has contributed to its success. NursingWorld has a strong reputation throughout the nursing and health care communities and receives more than 10 million hits per month. NursingWorld's prominence has been a contributing factor to OJIN's success which averages a quarter million readers per issue.

Professors at Kent State University College of Nursing develop the content for OJIN and work in partnership with the ANA to post new articles on NursingWorld at www.nursingworld.org/OJIN/. OJIN benefits from having some of the most qualified nurse experts available author articles. The journal presents cutting-edge topics from multiple perspectives, giving readers a chance to see the complexity of the topic. OJIN's interactive format encourages and supports dialogue through which nurses and other interested readers can express their views and better understand the views of others. This dialogue results in a comprehensive discussion of the topic that enhances the body of nursing knowledge and suggests policy implications to promote the health of the public.

The journal is highly respected by nurses around the world, and readership continues to grow at a steady rate. OJIN is available at no charge and offers millions of nurses the opportunity to have access to timely and expert advice from top professionals in their field, without ever having to leave home or their workplace. It's an award-winning journal, having received the Sigma Theta Tau Region IV Information Resources Award in 1999.

"OJIN has exceeded the wildest expectations of those who launched the journal five years ago," said OJIN Editor-in-Chief Harriet Coeling, PhD, RN. Even with its growth and success, Coeling still seeks to reach a broader audience. Coeling says future goals for the journal include increasing manuscript submissions from international nurses as well as increasing international readership. The journal also hopes to increase dialogue with nursing administrators.

ANA President Mary Foley, MS, RN, hails the success of the journal and treasures the partnership OJIN has with ANA. "OJIN is a wonderful resource for ANA members and nurses throughout the world," said Foley. "It provides nurses, health professionals, and the public a chance to gain insight into the issues affecting the nursing profession and health care. I congratulate OJIN on its fifth year anniversary and look forward to many more successful years of providing nurses with timely, scholarly health-related information through OJIN."

The American Nurses Association is the only full-service professional organization representing the nation's 2.7 million Registered Nurses through its constituent member nurses associations. The ANA advances the nursing profession by fostering high standards of nursing practice, promoting the rights of nurses in the workplace, projecting a positive and realistic view of nursing, and by lobbying the Congress and regulatory agencies on health care issues affecting nurses and the public.
