Nurses Helping Nurses: Disaster Relief Fund Provides Aid to RNs
Washington, DC --Nurses directly impacted by the tragic events of September 11, will be able to find relief thanks to Nurses House, a nonprofit organization designated by the American Nurses Association (ANA), the American Nurses Foundation (ANF) and the New York State Nurses Association (NYSNA) to accept contributions to assist registered nurses (RNs).
Nurses House, a national fund providing financial help and guidance to nurses in need, has been providing assistance to RNs since 1922. It provides aid to nurses who have suffered injury, illness, disability or other dire circumstances. The organization's long-standing record of assisting the nation's nurses is what drew the ANA to Nurses House for the establishment of a special disaster relief fund.
"Nurses have always been our nation's caregivers," said ANA President Mary Foley, MS, RN. "Since the tragedy, nurses have been volunteering in large numbers and providing assistance in various ways. While nurses continue to help others, we want to make sure resources are available to help nurses during their time of need. The disaster relief fund at Nurses House will enable us to do that."
Charitable contributions designated for the disaster relief fund will be allocated to registered nurses on a priority basis to meet present and future needs caused by the Sept. 11 events. The relief fund will assist nurses involved in the disaster relief activities and those directly affected by the tragedy. Nurses eligible for relief include those working in the surrounding hospitals, as well as those whose spouses were injured or lost in the disaster. Tax-deductible contributions to Nurses House can be made by sending a check to: Nurses Relief Fund, American Nurses Foundation, P.O. Box 96441, Washington, DC, 20090-6441.
# # # **Information in this release updates and clarifies information reported in the Sept. 14 release by the ANA regarding the disaster relief fund.
The American Nurses Association is the only full-service professional organization representing the nation's 2.7 million Registered Nurses through its constituent member nurses associations. The ANA advances the nursing profession by fostering high standards of nursing practice, promoting the rights of nurses in the workplace, projecting a positive and realistic view of nursing, and by lobbying the Congress and regulatory agencies on health care issues affecting nurses and the public.
